The Bottom Line: This is a great game. Old or young, moves at your own pace and is nostalgic and non-violent. Who can forget hours of Monopoly fun as a kid!
My husband and I are both over 60 years old and not interested in shoot 'em up, racing action or sci-fi adventure games. We usually fall in the sports and puzzle categories. This game is used by one of us at least 5 days a week. We even play each other occasionally. That is, when I don't mind getting creamed. Then we go best 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 5.
We play Classic, which is like the board game only in 3-D. You can choose different environment themes, like medieval, outer space or ancient Egypt. This changes the street names, house styles and playing pieces to add interest (and sounds).
Click a button to roll the dice and your chosen playing piece (I like the dog) moves around the board. When you land on property that is owned, you pay rent. If it is not owned, you can purchase it or send it to auction.
The game can be set up to play Classic or Party, where everyone rolls the dice and moves at the same time. I find the Party Mode to be noisy and confusing. Often saying to myself "what just happened?"
Before playing you can limit the number of houses and hotels that are available, increase the income for landing on the GO and Free Parking spaces, and distribute property so each player starts the game as a land owner. Everyone starts out with the same amount of money and property. You collect rent from anyone that lands on your property or pay rent for landing on theirs. Of course, you can build or sell houses and hotels as the game goes along.
The animation is very good. The playing pieces, for example: the car engine roars, has a brrrr (engine sound) as it drives along and does burnouts when it wins. Or, the dog barks and sort of trots the number of spaces rolled.
Roll too many doubles and you're off to jail. The board can be viewed from three perspectives and houses or hotels pop on when you buy or poof off when you have to sell. You can click to view mortgages, properties, or open the trade board, where you can make or refuse offers from other players.
You can choose from one to four players and play the computer A.I. or another human. We have both a corded and a cordless controller and can use either to play each other or against the computer. He will play against 3 virtual players with hard being the setting of choice. I play against 1 medium and 2 easy. That is what is good about this game, it has a level for everyone.
When a player bankrupts another player they get all of their property, minus the buildings and the deals can fly again!
We have discovered that the Artificial Intelligence will sell a mortgaged railroad for $62. You can get to know the patterns of the computer and it becomes part of your game strategy.
Just like the board game you can land on Chance and Community Chest. These can send you to jail (Do not pass go, do not collect $200), require property tax or put money in your bank account.
Just when you think you have it made, you land on another player's hotel laden property and you are selling off houses and mortgaging your property to stay in the game. One minute you are rich and the next you are bankrupt.
