| popsrocks's Full Review: Montana's Pizzeria |
I've recently written reviews of restaurants on Freeport's Nautical Mile. The canal has many restaurants, commercial and sports fishing boats, day cruise boats and gambling ships that go into international waters.
Montana's is another Freeport restaurant, a short distance from the canal, that should not be missed. This is a small family run pizzeria/restaurant. The prices are reasonable and portions plentiful.
THE DECOR
This is a very simple place. You walk into the pizzeria side. It's always busy. They make great pizza, calzones, and sandwiches. You're greeted by the matron of Montana's. She'll take you to the other side of the place. It's open to the pizza area but has a very distinct feeling of being separate. The restaurant side has perhaps ten tables of two or four and a few tables that can accommodate large groups.
A few paintings and pieces of the 'old' country are on the walls. At dinner time expect cloth napkins on cloth covered tables.
The MENU
Montana's has a full Italian menu. It's mostly Southern and Sicilian with some Northern. It does not have any specialty dishes, "every dish is special"!
The red sauces are excellent. It's funny, when I was a kid, it wasn't called sauce, it was gravy.
Montana's has a very fresh tomato taste with just the right amount of ingredients. Nothing's overly spiced. At dinner time fresh breads and pieces of pizza bread are served immediately. Butter is served, not olive oil.
Though they serve the usual veal, (very tender), chicken, and sausages we particularly enjoy their seafood dishes. All seafood is fresh from the markets on the canal. My wife's had the mussels over linguini with a slightly spicy sauce the last few times there. She cannot order anything else. Presentation is simple, yet appetizing.
I'm just remembering that two weeks ago we were here with my brother-n-wife, my mom, and her gentlemen friend. Mom and Frank had just returned from Italy. Mom, like my wife, had to go to Montana's and have her special dish.
Frank is an Italian that must have his food served just right, very picky. This is one of the few places where he orders calamari. They don't over cook it. He sends back dishes that are. Montana's has been perfect every time. In fact after we introduced him to this place, he has returned with his buddy's.
The STAFF
On Saturday nights the family seats and cooks. The regular help is under the eye of the owners. They are friendly, know the menu, and get the dishes out in a timely fashion.
DESSERTS-COFFEE-FULL BAR
They have a fine selection of wines by-the-bottle or glass. My wife and I usually share dessert. The coffee's good.
