| skbreese's Full Review: GPX CDP1805G Personal CD Player |
With the advances in technology and the growing popularity of MP3 Players, the demand for personal CD players has declined, and consequently, the prices have decreased significantly. When I started a new job six months ago, I was disappointed to find that the CD ROM on my aging IBM Thinkvision desktop had a performance issue. So, I went out in search of an inexpensive portable CD player, for office use. The GPX CDP 1850 Personal CD Player met my basic criteria, which included a compact, low priced, fully programmable, portable CD player strictly for office use.
Features
The GPX CDP 1850 model features all of the basics of a fully programmable portable CD player including buttons for skip/search, play/pause, stop, program, and mode, as well as a headphone jack, and volume control buttons. The package also comes with a set of ear bud headphones. The mode button enables the user to repeat one track, all tracks, choose intro play, random play, and normal play. The user can program up to 20 tracks with this model, with an easy 3 step process. Additional features include:
A 6 digit LCD Display that features the track number and playing time for the entire CD and each track as it plays
Automatic bass boost system for richer, fuller, sound
A DC jack (adapter not included)
Low battery indicator
Uses 2 "AA" size batteries
Personal Experience
This personal CD player works best with a high grade Alkaline batteries, like Duracell Alkaline Copper Top batteries, which basically doubles the battery life. I am normally able to get in excess of 5-6 hours worth of playing time with the Duracell Copper Tops. I was a little disappointed in the ear bud headphones which are a little too large to fit my small ears.
The sound quality on the CD player is actually quite good, and comparable to more expensive models I have for home use. However, any slight jostling will result in a skip on the track. One of the best features on this product is the pause button, which is particularly useful in the office setting, since it can be used for interruptions such as phone calls or unexpected co-worker visits.
Warranty
This product comes with a standard limited 90 day warranty. The manufacturer, Yorx company agrees, during the warranty period to repair any defect in material or workmanship or to furnish an equal product in exchange without charge. Such repair or replacement is subject to verification of the defect or malfunction and proof of purchase.
Overall recommendation
The GPX CDP 1850 is a functional, low tech, alternative to the more expensive, popular, MP3 players. I have several other portable CD players at home, that offer a few additional features and don't require battery replacement quite as frequently as this model. However, for the price, the GPX CDP 1850 offers all of the basic functions of a fully programmable personal CD player with good quality sound and a reasonable battery life. I recommend this product primarily for office use, as a decent alternative to the limited functions, and/or poor performance of the CD ROM on your company issued desktop.
