| kcocat's Full Review: Mopan River Resort |
We planned our Honeymoon in Belize. 6 nights at Mopan River Resort, and 6 nights at Soulshine resort (avoid Soulshine!). The first 6 nights spent at Mopan were absolutely fantastic! Had we to do it over again we'd have stayed there longer and dropped the palcencia/soulshine portion of the trip!
The place is run by ex-pat's from the US who are now Belizian citizens. They have created a fabulous all-inclusive mini-resort of high quality. By all-inclusive, I mean food, lodging, alcohol, and excursions, taxes, fees, tips, etc. (There are other resorts in the area that claim 'all-inclusive' that stick it to ya on tips, excursions, alcohol, etc. So look closely when researching your destiniation.) www.mopanriverresort.com has pictures of the grounds and cabanas.
The food was excellent, the quality of the excursions wonderful - there is not one thing negative I can say about this resort other than the shower water was lukewarm (big-deal)!
The cabins have palm roofs that are also lined with mosquito netting to keep the buggies from sneaking in, and the windows are all glass shutters allowing plenty of light within. We had absolutely NO bug problems at all. There is a cieling fan above the bed that kept us perfectly cool. The jungle sounds go 24 hours a day - howler monkeys, strange hoots and howls, exotic bird calls, bugs buzzing - the ambiance is incredible!
Note: there are two "luxury" cabanas that have kitchenettes (which you will NEVER use) and those guests staying there seemed hotter - perhaps the layout is different not allowing the fan to blow directly over the bed?
The resort employs a couple of guides who have Belizian guide certification and were VERY knowledgeable & friendly. One of the excursions was intertubing through caves - it was a complete blast and anyone from early 20's to mid 70's would enjoy it. Of course we visited many ruins, including Tikal in Guatemala (all included in the price!).
The resort is on the other side of the Mopan river (no bridges) so they come and get you using their own ferry. Anytime you leave they take you on the ferry, or you can borrow a little boat to use yourself.
This is a fabulous location for a honeymoon, or even the wedding (they have a little chapel and perform ceremonies!)It is adults only and very serene.
