As we begin to unpack costumes for the coming school year and for Halloween, I can't help but laugh at some costumes and cringe at others. Often, costumes get me to do both. Prudence the Naughty Pilgrim evoked laughter, cringing and my gag reflex. That is a rare combination.
Prudence's attire consists of a black crop top with white collar and cuffs. The contrast of Pilgrim purity and bare midriff is a bit bizarre, though I understand how it might be appealing if well executed. If the top was not a crop top, but actually met the waistband, this might give the flavor of the romanticized Pilgrim we all know from grade school. Of course, that image is not a historically accurate, but in the case of Prudence, historically accurate is hardly the big issue. The skirt that comes with the costume is an ankle length black skirt with an elasticized waist-band and side slits running almost all the way to the waistband. The waistband has a silver buckle attached. There are shoe buckles included, but you have to provide your own shoes and hoisery. The advertising picture depicts Prudence in white knee socks.
Aside from my own reaction, I have to judge this by the reaction of the men with whom I work. Not one thought this sexy or attractive. Though all have different tastes in women, they all agreed that this look didn't meet up to their fantasies. One suggested that if they had just had the crop top and not the high slit skirt or the other way around, it might have played with fantasy images. Another suggested that if they were going to reveal that much skin, they should have gone with a mini skirt and the crop top.
These are still all issues of taste, and that can vary. What cannot be argued is that this costume is incredibly poorly made. We had two that came in our order. Both had dirt marks on white material of the cuffs or collars. One had an issue with a shoulder seam that was coming undone before it ever got out of the bag. The material is thin and subject to snagging easily. We normally wouldn't have taken these out of the package, but we were thinking of using one on our store's mannequin. After finding the rip and the dirt on the first, we checked the second. Both are going back. If they aren't wearable by a dummy, they certainly aren't going to be sold in our shop.
We have a lot of call around our shop for Thanksgiving themed costumes. We have everything from kids costumes to turkey mascot costumes. We even have a Hester Prynne outfit with a scarlet "A" on it. That said, we're sending Prudence back. We won't replace her. We can't trust the quality. Besides, to order another slutty Pilgrim outfit would be a sin.
