SpellDreamer's Full Review: Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance for Xbox
So I rent the game, and right when I put the disk in the cd-drive I feel the urge to run, not walk, to the bathroom. When I return from my slight break the opening movie is playing. Showing why the title is called deadly alliance, I watched as the two really pathetic badguys, play their insipid coupe de grace on the cool ruler of the dark-realms, and kill Liu-Kang...
This shock tactic is only the first of many disappointments in this game that greatly saddened an old school gamer like me. Afterwards, you have the cool yet generic designs of the characters overshadowing their sad backgrounds. The button masher delight of the controls. The insipid dialogue of the game. And this is one of the highest recommended fighters for the X-box? So sad!
I could even look past the SAD display of story that involves the villians doing a predictable little cheat AGAIN, but what is even more sad are the endings. The only cool ones being for characters we already knew, and most of those being a repeat of the past. Look at a game like street-fighter and the endings are always one of the best part, the only person containing the predictable being Ryu's walk into the sunset. I can live with that as long as vega doesn't stab Ryu in the back in the most obvious of ways, while he fights M.Bison.
Next are the controls, as good as they always were...only no better. Look at a game like street-fighter 3, and you see multiple layers to it. You can be an awesome parry man with practice, or you can master their loose, but effective combo system. In MK:DA their are some layers, but none we haven't seen before, and their is no reason to master them when you can just crazily tap buttons and win.
Lastly, the game has a lot to come back to as far as extras, but only if you can get past my first two problems. A story that relies heavily on shock value, and easy cheesy button mashin' mo fo players.
Despite this, this isn't a bad game. Just easy. My problem is why buy this when you have choices like Capcom vs. SNK. A far deeper game experience.
