How We Removed Rust From Our Water
Written: May 15, 2012

Pros:They are removing rust or iron from our well water
Cons:More expensive, heavy bags, large pellets
The Bottom Line: These worked for us! No more pink stains in the toilet bowl.
We live on property that has a well, and the quality of our water has always been excellent. A couple years ago I started to see rust stains in my toilet bowls and nothing other than Whink Rust Stain Remover would get it out.
Finally we hired someone to pull our well pump and it was covered with rust. At the tune of $2000 we replaced it and the contractor added some powdered chlorine to the well and then flushed it. He said to so that several more times to remove any residual rust, but the water problems never cleared completely.
It was really noticeable when we used the downstairs bathtub to give our granddaughter a bath. I had a white bath pillow with a terry cloth cover and over the course of three months the pillow turned pink at the water line. A few stains were also persistent in the toilet bowl.
While buying Morton Water Softener Pellets at Walmart I spied a bag that looked similar, also made by Morton, but these claimed to be "formulated for high-iron water" and claimed to "reduce rust build-up in softeners". The bag stated that these pellets could "remove 15 times more iron than plain salt". The cost of the bag was around $6.50, two dollars more than the plain water softener pellets, so we decided to give them a try.
Claims (Taken from product)
* Help improve the taste of water * Help prevent rust stains on bathroom fixtures and tile * Help keep laundry and appliances free of rust stains * Helps prevent scale build-up in water heaters and pipes
Our Experience The bag does have a plastic handle, but the 40 pounds was too much strain on the hands trying to carry it this way. My husband just picked up the bags and added them to the grocery cart. My husband added these to our water softener tank by tearing the top of the bag partially and simply pouring them in. I think I would have found that a bit difficult to do since our tank stands 38" high. I'd probably have to stand on a step stool to be able to pour them in. It's only been one month since we added these to our water softener tank and we're already seeing an improvement in our water and I rarely see the pink streaks in the tub or toilet bowl.
We've been adding salt to our water softener tank for years now, and these are the strangest looking pellets I've ever seen. Some of the salt we have used looks like rock salt, others really do look like pellets, but these look like small little pillows and they are not all the same size. The bag states they have a time released action, maybe that's why the shape is so much different. I really don't care what they look like, all I care about is they work, and they started to work quite quickly for us. This product really solved a problem for us and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone else in our situation.
