Pros: Catches mosquitos if placed in an optimal, shaded, low wind area.
Cons: Start-up, maintenance, many "flame-outs," and expensive.
The Bottom Line:
The idea underlying the Mosquito Magnet is sound. American Biophysics is the wrong manufacturer for this machine. Too many technical glitches, start-up problems, poor customer support, and very expensive operationally.

My wife bought one of the first units when they were sold by FrontGate. It must have been in 2000 or 2001. I went through the exact experience as samasalabamas did in his review. Same problems of start-up, lack of customer service and poor ethics. Guess what? That original unit got so hot one time it melted the top. I called the local Fire Marshall and pointed this out to him concerning these MMs. I then called American Biophysics. After numerous encounters and negative experiences with the managers, supervisors, etc., I didn't get any hassles. They shipped a new one after I took pictures and sent them the melted cylinder head.
Now, once again, it's a new summer (2009) and I've yet to get the unit running steadily. Tried purging, re-charging the battery, cleaning the line, etc. Constant orange light followed by blinking red. I bought the cylinder from Blue Rhino. Samasalabamas comments were helpful. I'll buy a new cylinder and have it filled. I recently read where some of these propone distributors were ripping people off by not filling up the cylinders, which may explain why I'm having year-after-year start-up problems. I wonder why American Biophysics didn't notify their customer base of this problem? Those folks just don't seem to "get it." They really lack a customer-focused approach.
In sum, don't buy one of these. They are expensive to run and difficult to maintain. It also takes a while to find an ideal "catch basin" for good mosquito kills and black flies. They do catch mosquitos; but, I'd recommend a good spraying firm every month. It's more effective and cheaper.
