Krystyns's Full Review: Mother-Ease One Size Diaper
I got these diapers after years of cloth diapering using pins and pre-folds. The cost had always kept me from investing in these kind of diapers. I am a fairly frugal sort of person which is one of the main reasons I use cloth diapers in the first place. So spending $8-$9 per diaper made my heart race. But after a couple months of using these incredible diapers I can’t believe I waited so long!
What they are
One Size Motherease diapers are cloth diapers which have plastic snaps. They fit a baby from 8 pounds all the way up to 35 pounds. I know, I was skeptical too. But they really do! They have snaps arranged in different positions so that you can fit the diaper to almost any size baby. There are optional liners you can buy and snap into them which are perfect for older babies and for night time.
What I love about them
They are as convenient to change as disposables! No pins to mess with. Just take the old one off. Snap the new one on. My husband isn’t a big diaper changer. But cloth diapers were always his excuse. He found the pins and the squirming baby a dangerous combination. Well even my husband will change these occasionally because they are so simple. These diapers are also very soft and very absorbent. They dry quicker than the other diapers I had which is a big plus if you are drying them in your dryer. The package I got on the motherease site came with a few air-flow covers. I also recommend these. There are a few sizes, so one size won’t last you forever like the diapers will but they are the best covers I have come across and they are very adjustable, both the waste and the legs adjust so your baby doesn’t end up with those red elastic marks on their legs.
But are they really cheaper?
Disposable diaper fans will argue that cloth is just as expensive to purchase, wash and dry as those expensive $6 a package disposables. Don’t believe it, these are the same people who will tell you that the detergent and water that you go through washing them is as harmful to the environment as disposable diapers are. Anyone who wants to do a little research figuring what they pay per wash load in water, electricity and soap will be able to quickly dispense with such non-sense. It will vary a lot by area, and what you pay for your water (if anything) and electricity, what kind of detergent you buy and if you do an extra rinse with your diapers or not. For us, we have researched this and came to the conclusion that washing a load of diapers from pail to shelf costs us about .45. I do about 3 loads of diapers a week and have 2 children in diapers. Considering that the motherease diaper will last you from the time your child is a newborn until they are potty trained you will still save a ton of money even after figuring in covers and liners if you choose to buy them. How many kids will they last through? I have only used these particular diapers for a few months so I can’t speak from my own experience, but people at our church who use these say they have lasted 3-4 children depending on if they line dried them or not. Of course line drying saves on wear and tear and saves electricity but if you live in a rainy area like me (Seattle) it isn’t always an option. I do line dry diapers in the summer however and it isn’t nearly as much work as it sounds like it would be.
Who will like them
These are perfect for someone who is thinking about going cloth but isn’t sure they want to deal with the hassle. These diapers are easy enough for anyone to start out with. Cheap people will like these too. I say that with no disrespect. I am a cheap person. But a diaper that will stay with your child from the time they are born until they are potty trained is going to save you money! People who like cloth diapers but switch to disposables when going out for the day will also become fans of motherease diapers. These are the first cloth diapers I have ever been brave enough to use on day trips. Also, for those people who like to use cloth but don’t want the daycare provider to have to mess with it. These may solve that for you. These are so simple and fast to use that babysitters and day care providers may be willing to use them (depending on the policies of your provider of course)
Who will hate them
If you use disposables because you simply can’t stand the thought of washing, drying and putting away diapers, these aren’t for you. You will still have the same amount of rinsing, washing, drying, putting away that you would have with any cloth diaper. Also people who like to go hours without changing their baby won’t like these, or cloth in general. When we are out for the day and I use disposable I notice how long I can go before my babies even seem to notice they are wet. But these diapers are like any other cloth diaper, you need to change them fairly often or they are going to leak, or get so wet that babies skin will be irritated. Although I have found that using a liner and a good cover (like the motherease air-flow) will usually get you through the night without a leak.
How to get started
Buy a few used ones from an auction site or go to your local consignment store and ask them if they have any. Some places will put you on a list and call you when they get some in. Around here these diapers are hot. They sell used for only a few dollars cheaper than you can buy them for new. If that is the case where you are you may just want to go to the motherease site and buy a couple right from there. Start out with maybe 4-6 diapers and liners and 1-2 covers. I think they have a starter package you can try to find out if you like them.
Final word
If you are thinking about cloth diapering these diapers will convince you it is the way to go. If you have been doing it for years like me they will give you a whole new out look on it. Buy a few, give them a try. If you don’t like them you can always sell them to a consignment store. But if you do like them you will save yourself a fortune over the course of the few years your children are in diapers. And who knows, you might even feel good about not dumping 3000-4000 disposable diapers per baby into your local land fill.
