Pros: Lasting results, Adds a decent gloss.
Cons: Not exactly easy to use, Bottle configuration.
I have used Mothers car care products off and on since I purchased my first vehicle back in 1993. I had been told regularly that the Mothers brand was one of the best car care companies on the market which inevitably lead me to purchase Mothers California Gold Original Carnauba Cleaner Wax. One should take note that the following review is on the paste formulation.
About the product:
Mothers California Gold Original Carnauba Cleaner Wax is a product that is designed to remove both undesirable paint contaminants while at the same time leaving behind a protective layer of genuine Brazilian Carnauba wax (Carnauba is a vegetable wax from the Carnauba Palm) and a great shine. Unlike your typical car wax/rubbing compound which usually comes in the form of a thick cream or a liquid, Mothers Original Carnauba Cleaner Wax comes in the form of a waxy paste. This product is available in either a 16 oz. bottle (liquid) or a 12 oz. jar (paste). Since a single application should last up to 6 months, one 12 oz. jar should be enough for approximately 3 years of use (depending on the size of your vehicle). Mothers California Gold Original Cleaner Wax is safe for all types of paint surfaces, including clear coats.
Ease of use:
Similar to my experience with Turtle Wax's rubbing compound, it seems as though it is almost impossible to scoop this product out of the jar with a terry cloth/buffer pad without either dropping the wax on the ground or just making a mess in general. If you are a newbie to waxing your own automobile I highly suggest starting out with a spray type product such as Meguiar's Quik Wax. Another gripe I have with Mothers Original Gold Cleaner Wax is the thoughtless configuration of the jar. As if waxing your car was not a large enough chore, Mothers takes this task even further by making it insuperably difficult to open the jar without some sort of tool (ala paint can). I have found that a flat blade screw driver works best.
Note: Like a a conventional wax you will need to allow the product to dry and then buff.
So, does it work?
As a cleaner Mothers Cleaner Wax falls short of adequate. While this product does remove light surface spots, it performs nowhere near as well as using a clear coat prep, or a rubbing compound. If your vehicle is mildly spotted from bugs then Mothers Cleaner Wax may be all that is needed, however if you have scratches or dried on road grime that can't be removed from washing alone, you most likely will need to use a separate cleaning product. I always use Meguiar's Gold Glass or Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound before I use Mothers Cleaner Wax.
Working as a wax is definitely this product's strongest attribute. While it may be a bit more difficult to use Mothers Cleaner Wax than a conventional liquid wax, it seems as though both the protection and shine last longer. When I use Mothers Cleaner Wax I usually can go about six full months without having to re-wax. Results usually last about twice as long as Eagle One Wax As U Dry and equally as long as Armor All's diamond hard formula.
Mothers California Gold Original Formula Cleaner Wax can be purchased at most major automotive supply stores or large discount stores. In most case scenarios one 12 oz. jar will cost approximately $7.99, though I have seen this product go for as low as $5.99 at many Wal*Mart stores.
Mothers Original Cleaner Wax does produce an adequate shine, adds a medium gloss, and lasts as long if not longer than many conventional waxes. I'm rating this product at 3 stars, however I do not recommend it; there are simply more effective and easier to use products out there for less money.
