NisMax's Full Review: Motorola H500 Bluetooth Headset
I'll start off by saying I am no newbie to the world of cellphones and Bluetooth. The H500 is one of five Bluetooth headsets we have purchased. I started with a Jabra model that wrapped around the ear and extended down towards your mouth. That thing was the most uncomfortable piece of equipment ever. The next ones we bought were the H500 and H300 (AAA battery powered). The H300 is another great little headset and worked well for my husband who had too many things charging in his truck to be able to plug in a headset too. Instead he carried a battery charger and some spare rechargeable AAA batteries. He had since moved on to the Blue Parrot headsets made for truckers with noise-canceling boom mics. I continue to use my H500 and am quite happy with it.
Paired with my Samsung A900M this headset seems to have very good range. It worked even better with the A920 (but that phone met an untimely death). My phone hardly ever leaves my pocket anymore. This can have a negative effect though, since I forget it's there and don't remember to plug it in to charge.
Speaking of charging, that's another nice feature about this headset. The battery lasts about 4 times longer than the phone battery. While my phone requires charging a minimum of every other day, I can go over a week without charging my headset. I read another review that complained about the headset not warning of a dying battery. It does, but since it's the same sound a dying phone makes through the headset, it could be confused with a low phone battery. When the headset battery is getting low you will hear an intermittent ringing sound through the speaker. This will continue for several minutes before the headset actually shuts down. I find it hard to believe you could miss the warning.
The call button is touchy, as others have said. And I too have made accidental calls while carrying it in my pocket. The obvious fix for this would be to keep it on my ear, but since I listen to my iPod alot, I don't always keep it there. The good news is, if I shut it off and stick it in my pocket, I don't make as many erroneous calls since it takes a bit longer of pressing the button to turn it on, and if held long enough, the headset just goes into pairing mode without making any phantom calls. This is easily fixed and it starts up quick enough to be able to answer any incoming calls I might get. My phone (when working properly) allows me to connect to the headset on the fly while talking so making the swap from hands-on to hands-free is quick and easy.
Sometimes the head fails to connect to the phone, but I think this is a phone issue rather than a glitch in the headset since I didn't have this problem with my previous phone (A920), but the one before that (A860) did exhibit this issue.
All in all, I am quite happy with this headset. It's light, easy to use, has a great battery life and decent range.
