| dan_d_1977's Full Review: Motorola StarTAC 6500 Cell Phone |
The Motorola Startac is a neat little phone. Its a great small size, and works well. Its not as cool as those phones in the Matrix, but spring-loaded mechanisms are unreliable anyway.
This is a flip phone, but unfortunately it requires two hands to open unless you are really clever. It also comes with a neat little plastic belt-mount and a recharger. Mine can go about 3 days on a single charge, and I usually leave it on for about 10 hours a day.
This phone is packed with features, although they can get a little tricky to use. The interface is not intuitive, and may require you to spend some time with the manual to become proficient. It is browser-ready, voice and email ready, although you must activate these features separately. The menus are controlled by three buttons on the side. It takes a little practice, but soon you'll be using features like a pro.
My phone uses standard New York Verizon Wireless service at 29.99/month plus misc. charges. The phone also has dual-mode capability. It defaults to a digital scan, and reverts to analog if the signal fades. Failing that, you lose the call. I get the occasional crackle indoors, and sometimes I hear my own voice in delay, which can be disquieting. However it doesn't happen often and doesn't impede the quality of the call. If I am deep inside a building, I dont bother using it.
The Startac provides all sorts of memory options such as last ten numbers dialed, multiple slot-per-entry address book, and it keeps a handy record of all calls you don't answer with date/time stamp and one-touch call back. It has a backlight and a vibrating option. It has timers, tone control, lockout ability, several different ringers, even a rudimentary online tutorial.
Another nice feature of the Startac is its broadcast orientation. When open, its antenna is situated away from the head, minimizing the brain's potential exposure to electromagnetic radiation. There has been concern over possible health hazards of using these things, and Motorola has at least addressed this issue.
Bottom line: its a great phone for the price. The features are a little tough to use though, but the item itself is reliable and delivers clear sound with very rarely lost signals. If you want a phone, at least consider this one.
