| technocraft's Full Review: Motorola StarTAC 6500 Cell Phone |
I must be one of the last few Analog cellular people. I swear I must have the entire analog cellular network all to myself. I've had a StarTac 6500 for at least a year now and it's been a great phone. I got a black 6500 when the only black ones were the VIP edition (that was sneaky). The 6500 is the cheapest of the analog StarTacs with Vibracall.
So as not to be a review of analog vs digital vs pcs service, let me just say that I've only used analog phones (technophone, nokia, ericson(blech) and motorola) and analog coverage in South Florida is pretty ubiquitous.
This phone has been great. The battery life with just the standard Lithium ION battery is excellent as well, I typically leave my phone on all day and charge it at night at home. But I can easily skip that and leave it on two days running. I average about one to two hours a day talk time. Sound quality is excellent. Reception is either spot on or non-existent, but I tend to be able to make calls when noone else can (but most of my friends are digital).
The LED display is nice and not as fragile as the LCD on the new StarTacs, but it's impossible to see in daylight. The buttons on the side are great to quickly get through your stored names/numbers, but getting them in there in the first place can be tricky. And while this phone is small and well-proportioned that damn antenna sticks out too far...I wish it would retract all the way inside.
If you're still an analog user and you don't have a StarTac (or a new V3620 "Vader") then you seriously need this phone!
