| rubarb's Full Review: Motorola StarTAC ST7860W Cell Phone |
I recently purchased a Motorola Star-Tac phone to replace a early model Nokia. I am not a big cel-phone user, mainly because the phone I had in the past didn’t offer me enough to become a loyal follower. Now, with the competition in the market, the advances in technology, and ever-growing coverage area, I have decided to try the rage again.
I purchased this model for three reasons, size, radiation, and long-distance. I knew if the phone was large I would not use it so size was a must. I also really didn’t want brain cancer, so I researched phones that had lower radiated energy, and this was a fit too. There seems to be much debate about this subject but when my gray matter is involved, I don’t want to take any chances. Lastly, I wanted a phone that offered free long distance so I could somewhat shelter myself from the Phone companies monopolies.
So my initial reasons for purchasing the phone were satisfied. In addition to these features, I started to enjoy many other features. I can’t believe the signal strength achieved from this size of the phone and the options are very nice as well. The options offered with the phone are probably very similar to other companies but I will comment on this. The web access is very useful. I didn’t think that I could possibly need the web anywhere I am, and I don’t. But, if the service is provided and I have a ton of weekend minutes I might as well use it to get current information.
Now for the down side. The phone’s size is a great plus but it is a bit of a down side as well. The size makes handling the phone very awkward. You can hold the phone in your hand well enough, but it is very tough to hold the phone up with your shoulder. Again, because of the size, the buttons are pretty small. I don’t have a problem using them but I could see how some people could. I did have a small problem with the screen. I touched it and the liquid crystal started to bleed in the display. It would go away when I powered up the phone and eventually it went away all together, but I am afraid it could show a bigger problem. The fragility. Because of the size and physical properties I don’t think the phone would stand up to well to repeated and rough use.
Hope this helps
