Pros:Clarity excellent, range good although not 5 miles
Cons:need cradle to charge it
The Bottom Line: I recommend this radio because it has excellent clarity, and decent range, although not near the full 5 miles whatsoever.
After trying many different types of 2 way FRS, GMRS, and FRS/GMRS radios, I am extremely happy with the T6400s I purchased a few months ago. I am able to keep in touch with family members in large department stores, including out into the parking lot and beyond (into the street and down the road a bit).
Range: Not as labeled
I believe the range of most of these FRS and GMRS radios are measured by the designers if they were standing on 2 mountain peaks - direct line of sight with no obstructions. In the city on GMRS full power channels, with mostly 1 story buildings and lots of palm trees, I am lucky if I get 1.5 miles from t6400 to t6400 before functionality is lost.
Clarity: Excellent
I AM EXTREMELY satisfied with the clarity (voice-scramble OFF, though) when comparing these units to other GMRS and FRS radios I have tried. The voice scramble feature inhibits clarity.
Batteries-Time: Excellent
Using 1800MaH Rayovac NiMHi batteries, these units will last well over 12 hours on a single charge, with lets say about 10 minutes of total transmit time (transmit time is only an estimation).
Batteries-Charge: Poor
These units do NOT come with a charger. Also, the charger which comes with a cradle and NiMHI batteries is about $35. It would have been more suitable as well as cost effective, in my opinion, to build a charge jack right into the radio.
Summary:
I recommend this radio because it has excellent clarity, and decent range, although not near the full 5 miles whatsoever.
