| quarternotes's Full Review: Motorola V188 Cell Phone |
The MOTOROLA V188 Cell Phone is probably one of the simpler phones to use for most of us that just want a cell phone to mainly just talk. Introduced in 1995, this Motorola is very durable, although not indestructable, but, compared to most phones I have dropped before, like the Blackberry, the Blackjack, the blackjack 2, and a few Nokias, which, when hitting the ground, instantly broke beyond repair. Made of a plastic shell with a plasticated antenna, this phonehas already been dropped a dozen times, but keeps ticking after the licking.
COLORS, MEASUREMENTS, And APPEARANCE Gray and black in appearance, this flip phone has a sleek design that doesn't look like it's as old as it really is. The gray sides and front clashes with the black to give this phone an "edgy" look. It has a 3/8th's long inch screen that is an 1" 1/8th inch wide. This is small compared to the other phones widely used, but the letters and numbers come out quite full on the screen. The symbols in the top right corner are virtually impossible to see, but they are basic in design, so you know what the phone is displaying. Flip the phoneopen and the first thing you notice is the 1 3/8" wide screen by 1 1/2" long. The colors are bright, so your wallpaper and numbers come out strong enough to see from far away. The overall design on the keypad is basic and well used with other phones, having the on button on the top left, the off button on the top right, and the
OPTIONS
Speaker The speaker is by far the best i have ever seen on ANY phone. The words come out loud and clear, (especially when the volume is turned to the max, #7). you can even shut the phone while you are talking. The only con in this speaker phone is when someone is talking with the phone flipped open, they think they shut the phone off when they close the phone. this is the only option that keeps the phone on when you shut the top down. Speed Dial Let's you call with a touch of two buttons, (not one). This phone will automatically give every contact number you install their own speed number. Vibrate Lets you know by vibration if someone is calling. Voice dialing Lets you call someone by voice alone. Hands free option. Melody Composer Create your own ringtones and melodies. Calculator Hard to hit the small buttons, but still a good option. Built-in AOL Messenger This is one option i do not use, but Motorola made a smart move by having this option installed already. No Active Sync charges. Built-in Games Once again, annother option already installed. Saves buying downloads just because you want to play a game on your phone. not recommended for someone trying to keep their phone charged for a whole day. This option is the fastest way to drown your battery. Alarm Clock Alarm clock that i'm TOTALLY impressed with. Having to get out of bed sometimes at 4:00 A.M., this alarm on this phone actually wakes you up, (If you turn up the volume).
BATTERY Generally this battery does not perform any miraculous features. It's not the worse battery, keeping the phone on as long as a day and a half, but prolonged use will knock out and drain the battery in as little as 4 hours. This battery has lasted longer than the average phone iu have owned to date, but currently this phone will charge down fast once it displays the first bar gone from it's battery indicator.
ACCESSORIES Like other phones, you can spend a paycheck with the options you have with accessories. Everything from Bluetooth adaptors, to hard shell cases, to Lanyards to keep the phone around your neck. the best accessory I have used by far was basically the car phone charger. keeps the phone lasting all day.
CONS On the side of this flip phone, one of the most irritating options is the volume control. Motorola didn't think things through when creating the volume control on the outside of the phone. this phone as been turned off accidently over 100's of times, creating missed calls and missed text messages. Even with a hard shell case that covers the whole phone, it will sometimes still turn the volume down. sitting in church is also quite a battle and embarrassment when your phone is accidently turned from vibrate to full blast too. The volume control should've been installed in a different area of this phone. The buttons are also very small, sometimes leading you to hit the wrong numbers. The numbers also don't register all the time, leaving you dialing a six-number wrong number, instead of the right one. When paying for minutes, this gets quite expensive.
OVERALL This phone is suited best for someone who likes a simple, well set phone. It's not filled with gadgets and gizmos, and you don't have to take a college course to use all of the options. although you can text, 9which is something I don't do), Motorola makes sending and receiving easy enough that a child can do it.
Measuring less than four inches when closed, this flip phone is easy to carry, and the options of getting different carrying cases are unlimited, unlike alot of other phones that are odd in shape.
In this complex world of cell phones, we are often overwhelmed at the options one can use. We have cell phones that can go to the internet, take pictures, text others, and even locate one another with GPS. The list of options is rather long and complicated, sometimes taking the user "back to college", just to learn how to use most of the options their phone uses.
