| pbyaeger's Full Review: Motrin Cold & Flu |
I don't drive a pick-up truck, chew tobacco, or hang out with boys named Bubba and Billy-Bob. My home isn't up on wheels or stilts, and the family pet isn't trained to pounce when a big ol' raccoon sneaks into the yard. However, I've spent the larger part of the last few days fantasizing about taking out the pliers and ripping the teeth right out of my head.
Why? Because until yesterday morning, I've been in the sinus-teeth-torture phase of a rather nasty cold. With my luck, that manifests in facial pain and pressure, and teeth so sore it's unbearable. (I'm now in the coughing, moaning, and lying around like a lump stage, thank you, which did not do much for Thanksgiving dinner.)
Lucky for me, we had a full box of Motrin Cold & Flu in the house. With active ingredients Ibuprofen (pain reliever/fever reducer) and Pseudophedrine (nasal decongestant), this medication is the same thing as Motrin Sinus--just packaged differently to capture the consumer. In fact, the same combination is available from other brands and in store brands, so if you prefer something else, there's no need to stick to Motrin.
Then again, why bother switching--this stuff actually works. I take two pills with a huge glass of water (room temperature, as cold is irritating) and within 30 minutes, my teeth no longer hurt, and the facial pressure is relieved. That blissful stage lasts for about 4 hours, when I promptly pop two more.
I try not to take this medication for more than a day or two--my pulmonary doctor frowns on its use for asthmatics, and my old family practitioner used to say psueodophedrine raised my blood pressure. And ibuprofen, much as I love it for pain relief, wreaks havoc on my digestive system, usually causing mild bleeding within 3 days.
One pleasant side effect (for me, anyway) is that Motrin Cold & Flu helps me to sleep. I don't know whether that's the sedative influence of the pseudophedrine, or the pain relief allowing me to drift away. Either way, it's quite nice. My head hits the pillow and I'm out cold for a good 6 hours.
Like any other OTC medication, it's best to read the label and decide what's right for you, with your doctor. In my case, I balance the risks with the almost-instant pain relief. I don't want to take narcotic pain relievers for something that can be resolved OTC--but your doctor may tell you something different.
Motrin Cold & Flu is a fairly new product, and often prices cheaper than Motrin Sinus--even though they're the same thing. This box ran about $4 for 20 tablets--a lot less expensive than what I'd pay to have those teeth replaced. . . not to mention the pliers.
