I have always counted on Motrin for taking care of my kids fever and pain, but never really used it a lot for myself until this weekend. Whenever I get pain, I usually take a different medicine, mainly because it works better on my back than anything else, but this weekend was different. Before I get into what happened, let me tell you a little about the product.
Motrin IB is a temporary pain reliever that can temporarily alleviate pain from headaches, toothaches, muscle aches, minor arthritis, minor back aches, cramps and it also helps reduce fevers.
Motrin IB is intended for use by adults and children 12 years of age or older. If you have a child under the age of 12, you will need to use the one intended for children. The recommended dosage is one caplet every 4 to 6 hours as needed, you can take two if your pain or fever doesn't respond to one, but they tell you not to exceed 6 caplets in a 24 hour period. Now if you go by their recommendation of no more than 6 caplets in a 24 hour period and you take two caplets per dose, you would obviously need to space the dosages 8 hours apart to be within their recommendations, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
There is only one active ingredient in Motrin IB, there are other inactive ingredients, but ibuprofen is the only active ingredient. There is 200 mg of ibuprofen in each caplet.
As with all medicines, there are warnings on the bottle that warn you not to take if you've had an allergic reaction to other pain medications or fever reducers before talking to your doctor. Other warnings include an alcohol warning, contacting your doctor before taking if you're taking any other medications or are pregnant.
My Experience
Saturday morning I got up from the computer and I ended up kicking one of the kitchen chairs. I've done this a million times, so at first I just waited for the pain to subside, but this time it didn't, I had succeeded in breaking my toe. I took a couple of Percogesics and waited. Unfortunately, my reliable pain medicine didn't do a darn thing for the pain and my baby toe was now swollen. I tried applying ice to help the swelling, but I couldn't keep the ice on because it just made it hurt more. My husband went up to the store and came home with Motrin IB, mainly because of the fact that ibuprofen is known to help reduce swelling. I took a couple of the caplets and then proceeded to soak my foot in my foot spa to see if that would help and then propped it up and waited for the medicine to work.
The Motrin IB did help dull the pain a little bit, but not a lot, but I kept taking it and soaking my foot to help reduce the swelling. I've rested it, as much as I can being a Mom of three, kept it elevated as much as possible and took the Motrin IB. After two days, the swelling is starting to come down and the medicine dulls the pain enough where I can function, as long as nothing touches my toe.
I may still be hobbling around, but the Motrin IB did help by dulling the pain and it is continuing to help reduce the swelling. At least it is spring time and summer is around the corner, because it doesn't look like I'll be wearing shoes for a while. If it can help with my pain and swelling after my accident, I'm sure Motrin IB can help alleviate the pain that may be bothering you.
