Remember when Burt Reynolds went into his bedroom, drew the curtains shut and stayed there for what seemed like forever? His problem was TMJ. TMJ is short for temporal mandibular joint disorder. This is problem with your facial muscles, jaw and bite. An improper bite or misalignment of teeth can cause it, along with many other things. My problem is chiefly with clenching my teeth and a misaligned bite. While my pain has never been so severe as to put me in bed for weeks on end, I have suffered with this for several days into a week. Medication used to treat this pain can be addictive, or just irritating. One makes you sick to your stomach, the next gives you the runs, the third blocks you up. Its a no win situation. The pain can be so intense that you sometimes wish you could just pass out and be done with it for a while. In those cases, I've received anti-seizure medication for people with epilepsy.
But I needed a maintenance drug. Something that I could take at any time of the day that wouldn't make me sleepy or dizzy. My orthodontist recommended Motrin. The next time I had the first little hint of pain coming on a took the Motrin, and continued taking it until all the tension and hints of pain were gone. Then I backed down on it and no more extreme pain. If you have TMJ, don't think that this will relieve all the pain, but it makes it bearable for me. I can function.
I cannot and will not tell you the dosage that I take in this case, it does exceed the recommended dosage, but it is following the doctors direction. It doesn't give me any of the problems that prescription drugs give me. It relieves the pain fast than any other over the counter drug. I can usually feel relief in a matter of a half hour to one hour when first starting.
The only side effect that I have had while on Motrin was getting sick to my stomach, but after talking to the doctor, I now take it with a glass of milk if my stomach is empty. It solved that problem.
We look like we have stock in Motrin, there is always an economy size bottle in our medicine cabinet. If you experience any problems with TMJ, I send my prayers out to you. No one should have to put up with this pain. But, I do recommend that you talk to your doctor about Motrin. It available in prescription strength, but why spend the extra money when TMJ drugs aren't covered by most insurance drug cards.
