I was told a few years ago, by a nurse after having surgery, that I have a "high pain threshold." Well, I suppose that's true, because I'm not usually too bothered by headaches, common muscle pain or things like that. I can put up with a lot. But, the only downfall with that is that when I hurt...I really hurt!!!
A few months ago, I had a severe toothache from a broken tooth that I had neglected to have taken care of in a timely manner(I'm a chicken, but that's a whole other review!). This toothache was sheer agony, affecting not only the actual area of the problem, but the pain radiated into my jaw and was just making me absolutely and completely miserable. And of course, in true Murphy's Law style, the pain started on a Friday evening and absolutely flared overnight, with no open dentists' offices open for the weekend. What was I supposed to do?
I realized that the best thing I could do was to keep myself as comfortable as possible until Monday morning, when I could get to the dentist. So, at 1am, when I couldn't take it anymore, I found myself digging through the cabinet over my kitchen sink where I keep all of our pain relievers and such, and discovered Motrin IB. Thank Goodness!!!
I needed a serious jump-start on relieving this horrible pain, so I took three of the Motrin IB tablets (200 mg each) and let them go to work, which thankfully they did within a half-hour or so! The relief lasted for about four or five hours or so, and then I popped two more IB's. I knew I had to keep on top of the pain, or there would be no way I could tolerate it for the weekend. The recommended dosage is 1-2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours, so after the initial bigger dose, I kept to a pretty good regimen following the directions on the bottle. Thankfully, it kept the pain within a fairly reasonable level until I could get to the dentist.
My weekend turned out alright, after all!!! Thank you, Motrin IB! (But I should tell you, I did call the dentist on Monday at 7am!!!)
I've read that, if used regularly over an extended period of time, this medication has the potential to create stomach problems, such as ulcers and things of that nature. Fortunately, I don't think I'll have to worry too much about that, but just thought it was important enough to mention to anyone who plans to take Motrin IB for any length of time. The only real side effect I personally noticed about Motrin IB was that it causes a bit of stomach discomfort and gas, but given the alternative of my throbbing toothache, that was a walk in the park!
This medication should not be taken by aspirin-sensitive people, or to those under 12 years of age. Take the smallest dose possible, and do not take more than six tablets in a 24-hour period.
I must admit, Motrin IB is definitely the best pain reliever of its type that I've ever used. I will most certainly buy this again, and I will always make sure that I have a bottle in my cabinet...just in case I have any more unwelcome weekend visitors!!! I recommend you do the same!
