| solleks's Full Review: Motrin Ib |
My mother and I were shopping in Washington, D.C. when she accidentally slammed her thumb in the door of a departing taxi. A six-hour visit to the emergency room confirmed that one bone was shattered. The doctor prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection and something “to help with the pain.”
Later that night, I asked Mom how she was feeling. “Fine,” she said. I looked at her closely. Mom is of German stock and doesn’t believe much in complaining. She’d probably say she was fine if she were being torn limb from limb. But her face had lost the white, set look it had taken on after the accident, and her smile seemed relaxed. Years later, she was still talking about the “miracle drug” that had kept her comfortable after she broke her thumb.
The miracle drug was Motrin.
Flash forward half a decade. I cracked a tooth on Friday night. Forget chewing; the pain was so bad I could scarcely even breathe. My dentist was sympathetic, but not particularly helpful. There was simply nothing she could do for me until her office opened on Monday. Perhaps, she suggested, I could take a couple of Motrin.
Mumbling to myself about what I’d love to tell her to do with her Motrin, I went to my medicine cabinet, fished out the pills, and swallowed them. I won’t say they magically cured the pain, but they did make the discomfort bearable enough so that I got through the weekend with sanity—if not good humor—intact. Since that experience, Motrin has been my pain reliever of choice.
Medically, Motrin is considered an NSAID (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug). The active ingredient is Ibuprofen. It is used to ease pain, reduce inflammation, and lower fever. It is most commonly prescribed to treat problems such as arthritis, menstrual cramps, headaches, muscle aches, and minor injuries.
Motrin sold over the counter typically comes in 200 mg strength tablets. According to instructions on the box, the recommended dosage for adults is one to two tablets (200 mg to 400 mg) every four to six hours; however, doctors may prescribe up to four tablets (800 mg) every eight hours. Motrin is not recommended during the last months of pregnancy, and should not be used by anyone with an allergy to aspirin, or with a history of stomach or intestinal problems such as ulcers.
As a pain reliever, I have found Motrin quite effective. I have, however, also occasionally experienced the most common side effect of this medication, which is upset stomach. Taking the pills with a little food seems to help. So does not exceeding the recommended dosage.
Overall, I have found Motrin safe, reliable, and effective. I highly recommend it.
