Oh headache please go away!!!
As some of you know these past few weeks I’ve had extensive dental work done. I thought it would be just a matter of grinning and bearing it. I was wrong. What started out as a simple process turned into a nightmare complicated by infection in my jaw bone.
I started my day boldly. The nurse asked me if I had filled my valium prescription they had offered me when I made the appointment. (This office doesn’t offer laughing guess which is criminal) “No, I don’t think I’ll need it” I bravely told her. She gave me a look that seemed to come out of her eye turn around a corner and return. That was when I first felt the hair on my neck rise. She then offered me three motrin. “Take these for the swelling and discomfort prior to your precedure” It was at this point my knees began to knock together.
I finally settled down in my chair. The endodontist took his ghastly metal syringe and numbed up my mouth. Within an hour it was over. He looked at me severely and told me I had an absess, infection, and other bad news. He then wrote two scripts. One for an antibiotic and the other for pain meds. Then he gave me some great advice. “ While at the pharmacy buy two bottles of Motrin. This is going to help with your pain management”.
His instructions were to take the Motrin at 4x the recommended dosage in between the times I was to take my prescribed pain meds. This was 800 miligrams as the pills are 200 miligrams each. He assured me that this would keep the swelling down and “extend” my comfort between doses of codeine. What happened next proved his advice to be true.
I went home and fell promptly asleep after taking my first dose of codeine. I woke up feeling like I had a bullet in my brain. It was not yet time for my next dose of codeine. I grabbed the bottle of Motrin, ripped the packaging away and swallowed 4 pills as quickly as I could. Within 40 minutes I could see again and the intenseness of the pain was gone. I took Motrin religiously throughout the next week to relieve my suffering. I am very grateful to have had it to get me through the hump between the codeine meds.
Here is what the bottle says:
For hospital and government use only If anyone can tell me why it says this I am very curious. I plan to ask my doctor the next time I am in and will update this review when I have a satisfactory answer.
“For temporary relief of headache, muscular aches, the minor pain of arthritis, TOOTHACHE, backache, minor aches and pains associated with the common cold, the pain of menstrual cramps, and reduction of fever”
The directions state to take one pill every 4-6 hours and not to take more unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
If stomach upset occurs you should take this medicine with food or milk. I took it on an empty stomach and did not have any problem.
The label also warns you to watch for an allergic reaction. An indication of allergy would be :
*hives
*asthma (wheezing)
*facial swelling
*shock
It is not suggested that you use this medication if you’ve had a previous allergic reaction to pain reliever or fever reducer.
I would highly recommend MOTRIN for pain management. I don’t think I would have made it through the first part of my dental saga without it. Did I say first part? Oh yes, I have to repeat the entire procedure on the opposite side of my mouth next. I may just shoot myself first.
PS: My husband often uses it as an anti inflammatory when he has strained muscles and he says it works great for him too! Thanks for reading!
