| candylee's Full Review: Motrin Migraine Pain |
Eager to jump on the migraine bandwagon, Motrin has hyped up its new product as a solution for people sensitive to the acetaminophen and caffeine in other OTC migraine medicines. Not too impressive since it contains the same amount of ibuprofin as regular Motrin. Drug companies, like Excedrin, explain that they can use the same formula, but give the product a new name because they change the labeling and instructions.
As a migraine sufferer, I have spent plenty of time with my doctor trying out different treatments. I was told that ibuprofin would probably not have any effect on a migraine and that I should take Tylenol (acetaminophen) if I didn't have my medicine on me. The best use I can find for this Motrin stuff is for relieving cramps. Ibuprofin isn't even recommended for regular headaches, much less migraines.
The main thing it is lacking is a vasoconstrictor, which is a product that helps constrict the swollen blood vessels in the head that a migraine causes. Caffeine is the main ingredient for this in OTC drugs. Prescription medicines contain something better, though I can't remember what it is called. I know they used to use ergot, but that caused occasional hallucinations.
So don't be confused by these new "migraine" products. If you really do suffer from migraines, then see your doctor about getting medication that can actually do something!
