I’ve inherited a lot of things from my beloved Dad. Among them are his warm smile, his artistic flair, and his propensity for migraine headaches.
Growing up, my Dad would get a migraine at least once a week. During this time you did not want to mess with him. He would turn into a big grizzly bear and seek relief in his dark, quiet, bedroom. The only thing that seemed to help my Dad cope with his migraines was Excedrin and, whenever I would get headaches, he would give me Excedrin too with the mantra: “Excedrin is the only thing that works for migraines.”
My Dad was partially correct. Excedrin did indeed help my migraines disappear, but it also left me hyper and charged with excess energy. This is because Excedrin and the newer Excedrin Migraine contains caffeine as its primary ingredient. As someone who is very sensitive to caffeine, Excedrin was a Catch 22 for my migraine relief: it took away the headache, but it left me acting like a spaz. However, for anyone that suffers from migraines, you know that relief from the headache is the most important thing, so I would take the Excedrin despite its unsettling side effect.
Fast forward to 1998 when I met my fiancé who is a dentist and advocate of Motrin for any type of pain relief from tooth aches to head aches. Now, as I said, I grew up in an Excedrin family and had never used Motrin, but when my fiancé saw me popping Excedrin for my headaches he suggested I try Motrin IB. Unlike Excedrin, Motrin IB does not have any caffeine in it; its main pain-relieving ingredient is ibuprofen.
I tried the Motrin and loved it! Not only did it take away my migraines as quick as the Excedrin (within an hour) it did not leave me with any side effects. I was not buzzed like the Excedrin caused me to be, nor was I sleepy like some other pain relievers cause. I began using Motrin for my headaches. I especially loved that I could take Motrin if I got a headache at night, whereas if I got a headache at night before I would not take anything because the Excedrin would keep me awake from the caffeine.
This year, Motrin came out with a special Motrin for Migraines product, which is essentially the same thing as normal over the counter Motrin, but is specially marketed for migraine relief. Both Motrin IB and Motrin Migraine Pain contain 200 mg of ibuprofen as their active ingredient. They differ only in their indications/use, dosage/directions, and labeled warning statements. Motrin Migraine Pain should not be used in anyone younger then 18, while Motrin IB can be used for anyone 12 and under.
When I say “anyone,” it is important to note, though, that not everyone can use Ibuprofen safely. If you are on any other medications, are prone to stomach bleeding, or have more then three alcoholic drinks a day, you should check with your doctor before using any Motrin. Some people are allergic to ibuprofen and could suffer from hives, facial swelling, asthma (wheezing), and shock if they take Motrin.
All over the counter medications have such warnings as Motrin, though, so don't be scared away by the disclaimer. I never have had any problems or side effects from Motrin IB or Motrin Migraine Pain. Both have been wonderful in alleviating my migraines without the side effects of Excedrin. I love Motrin Migraine Pain and carry a bottle in my purse at all times.
