Cons: only for dessert, some may resist kirsch with chocolate, costly
The Bottom Line: If you like rich, chocolate dessert cordials, this is perfect for a cold winters night with coffee or a hot summer's day served on ice.
ChristineDale's Full Review: Mozart Chocolate 34 Proof Liqueur
Vegas has its Elvis impersonators, Kentucky has Daniel Boone, and Salzburg – ah quaint fortressed town – has Mozart.
Everywhere you turn in Salzburg, Austria, Mozart has been capitalized upon. You can visit his birthplace, of course, but there isn’t a shop in town that doesn’t sell Mozart truffles, mugs, even Mozart ice cream (if you get a chance to try this – yum!). So where else could a premier Austrian liqueur have derived its moniker than from their native son, Mozart?
What is Mozart?
Mozart Liqueur is a chocolate liqueur made in Salzburg, Austria. It is only 17% alcohol by volume, or 34 proof, which makes it very palatable for you lightweights, and for dessert lovers.
It is packaged in a round bottle with gold wrapping, which makes it look much like a gigantic candy truffle, complete with elaborate script print and a luxurious chocolate colored label.
This is a rich chocolate and kirsch (cherry schnapps) liqueur with a blend of five choice distillates. Cherry with chocolate, or for that matter any number of fruit flavors with chocolate, is typically Germanic.
Why Do I Like Mozart?
Well, if you hum a few bars… oops, sorry.
I like Mozart because of its sweet dessert characteristics. This is in no way a “serious” spirit, like whisky or Bombay. It is a bit whimsical, actually, because it recollects a childhood sweetness, but gives an adult interpretation.
Mozart is not at all versatile, and for the price one might want more from a liqueur. But in fact, it does its one job well. It is thick and tan in color, pours well into a glass or right over ice cream. It costs about $22 for 750 ml, but if you look for specials you can often find them. I particularly like to make these kinds of purchases around Christmastime, when many manufacturers make box sets complete with cordial glasses at no extra charge to you.
Who Should Buy Mozart?
This is a liqueur for you sweet tooths out there, especially for those who like Bailey’s Irish Cream, Kahlua, and other similar liquors. (If you’re not sure if you’ve had those, give a peek at my reviews).
Since Mozart needs to be stored in the refrigerator after opening, it is not a great option for a party where it will be left out in the sun. However, a fabulous way to end a hot Summer day is by pulling a bottle of Mozart out of the fridge and serving it up on the rocks while watching the sun set over the water!
Keep in mind that unlike most other liqueurs, Mozart only keeps for about six months or so in the fridge, so if you plan to buy it, plan to use it.
This is not a basic addition to a bar, by any means. On the other hand, this is a bottle you could enjoy even if you have no other liquor in the house, since it serves up so nicely on its own over ice, or as an addition to dessert. Mozart makes a very nice hostess gift, with its elegant wrapping.
What Else Can I Do With Mozart?
The manufacturer suggests sipping a small glass of Mozart with your coffee (you could just pour in a shot). Also, you can create a Coupe Mozart by adding more than a dash of Mozart to strawberry and pistachio ice cream. If you’re not that daring, try it over a good vanilla, or maybe a Milky Way ice cream.

I admit that during my trip to Salzburg I stood on the white bridge from the Sound of Music and actually sang Do Re Mi to a rushing stream. I followed up this American insanity with the sweet chocolate flavor I have come to love. I must admit, whether it be Rodgers and Hammerstein’s interpretation or the echte Mozart, the Salzburgers maintain a fantasy world. Do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle of Mozart Liqueur and be swept away with a symphony of flavor!
