I have never had much luck with electronics, in fact, I often joke that I have a curse upon me. When it comes to coffee makers, Im not much better. Inevitably one of three things happens; I forget to turn it off and the pot cracks, I break the pot or it starts to leak water when it is brewing. Ive only had a few really solid coffee makers in my life and as my luck goes, when they died or needed replacing Id find out they were discontinued or replaced with an improved version that flat out sucked. Coffee, for me, is one of the food groups technically its not really a food but if I dont have at least half a pot by mid-morning, generally, you dont want to get in my way. You could serve me really bad coffee and as long as I am under the five cup cut off point that I have for any kind of coffee and really good coffee things wont get ugly. The kind of coffee that you are making is pretty important in what you get in the way of taste but if you have a crappy coffee maker then the point is moot. If it leaks, takes forever to perk or has an attitude then you could have a real dilemma on your hands as well as a dangerous situation if you get water on the counter or floor.
Mr. Coffee 10 Cup White Coffee Maker AD10
This is a great coffee pot for anyone that likes to make a large sized pot to enjoy. Truth be told, I also use this to make tea during the day but Ill stick to coffee for the time being. One of the biggest perks to this is that there is a water gauge on the side of it with a little floating red ball that shows you exactly how much water you have poured into it. What is this such a great thing? I hate using the coffee carafe to pour water into the reservoir why? Because now matter how slow I pour or how careful I am, I always make a complete mess of it. I use one of the Rubbermaid cereal storage containers to pour the water into the back of the coffee maker and slide it behind it on the counter. If I want to make a half of a pot [that rarely happens] then I can see how much water Ive added to the tank. This also helps to eliminate over filling as well as when I have a forgetful moment and cant remember if I added water to it or not.
Another great feature is the sneak-a-cup feature that allows you to pull out the carafe when it is in the brewing cycle and pour a quick cup. This sounds like a great idea but if you do it with the very first cup that comes out you arent going to get a great tasting cup of coffee it will be strong and in all honesty, wont taste all that appealing. Oh sure, you will get a nice jolt from it but it could weaken the rest of the pot. The carafe is strong but after all it is made of glass so you do need to be a little gentle with it, especially if you have left it on the burner a few times and the glass starts to get brittle. This will make it even more susceptible to breakage when you are using or cleaning it. The handle is easy to grip and you dont have to worry about getting burned when handling it, the plastic that runs between the glass and the handle provides a good bit of protection. The swing out basket that holds the filter and grinds is a nice touch, it opens and closes easily and you dont have to stand there trying to jam a stubborn tray back into place.
About the only real downside to this coffee maker is that it gets dirty quickly. Sometime I swear I look at it the wrong way and it is covered with this mystery layer of grime. Im not even talking about coffee grinds or slashed spaghetti sauce, I am talking d-i-r-t. I usually wait until the unit has cooled off then wipe it down with some Fantastik or surface cleaner and that seems to do the trick. The carafe gets soaked once a week in a cleaner with some bleach added to remove the stains that have accumulated. Clorox Soft Scrub With Bleach is a good pick if you want to soak the carafe for a while but please, make sure you rinse it well before you use it. The basket where you put the filet can be removed to be cleaned and it does snap back into place easily. Never attempt to clean this coffee maker when it is on or until it has had a chance to cool off, you could just end up with a nasty burn.
This coffee maker will brew up ten cups of coffee at a time but before you get all excited about that, consider that their idea of a cup is five ounces. I can suck that down in a couple of seconds if I am in a hurry or running out the door. So far I havent has any problems with this coffee maker and hopefully it will fair better than some of the others that I have purchased in the past. I picked this up at my local Target store for about twelve dollars but I could be a little off on that price. It was about three months ago that I purchased it when I was restocking my kitchen after the big move. One thing that I absolutely love about this is where the on and off switch is located. Its on the side of the unit so its almost impossible to bump it or accidentally hit it. This is nice for me because I am ultra paranoid about this type of thing.
The Bottom Line
So far this has been a great coffee maker and Ive had no major issues with it. It comes with a one year warranty against manufacturer defects but that doesnt mean squat if you dont fill out and return the warranty card that comes with it. This doesnt cover the carafe so if you break it you will have to make the choice between buying a replacement one or buying a whole new coffee maker. If you are looking for a good coffee maker that is easy to use and brews up a full pot in about five minutes then this is one that you should check out. Mr. Coffee is one of the biggest names in the coffee business and like I said in the title of another review
if only my husband were this faithful, chances are wed still be married!
As always, thanks for the read!
