Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Mr. Coffee CG12 12-Cup Coffee Maker
I have taken a liking to coffee as the years have progressed. I once thought of coffee as a disgusting, bitter concoction with no redeeming qualities other than the caffeine. But coffee has improved and the means to brew coffee has followed suit. One coffee maker that does very little but also costs very little is the Mr. Coffee CG12 Coffee Maker, a drip coffee maker from one of the best- known names in the business. Coffee Maker Facts: The Mr. Coffee CG12 Coffee Maker is a twelve- cup coffee maker that is mostly plastic in construction with a glass carafe. The water reservoir is located behind this coffee maker and it includes cup markings on two sides, for easier measuring. A plastic flip- top covers the water reservoir and the filter basket.
This Mr. Coffee model coffee maker has 900 watts of power and is UL listed. A simple on/off switch in the front of this coffee maker is used to power the unit. There is no clock and no other features with this coffee maker. Final Thoughts:
Mr. Coffee CG12 Drip Coffee Maker is a very simple, no frills device that brews from two to twelve cups of your favorite java in reasonable time. This coffee making device is one of the least expensive twelve- cup coffee makers on the market, with a base price less than $20, making it easily within the limits of most budgets.
My interest in coffee is much greater than it was in the past and with my improved interest, my demands for a coffee maker have also increased. There was a time when a simple machine would have been all I wanted, but today I am much more particular about my coffee maker, not to mention much more particular about the coffee I am willing to drink. The Mr. Coffee CG12 Drip Coffee Maker gets the job done, but it offers no control over the brewing process and no extra features to make it worthwhile.
First, let's talk about the handful of good points with this Mr. Coffee device. It does offer an attractive appearance and it looks nice on most any countertop. It is offered in either black or white, and one of these should be just right for most any kitchen. It brews up to twelve cups and the carafe is attractive, sturdy, and easier to clean than the Mr. Coffee's of old, which featured the now infamous "squatted" carafe. The reservoir markings on both sides are also convenient.
Now, let's talk about the negative points with the Mr. Coffee CG12 Drip Coffee Maker, because there are many. The most obvious is the lack of features. This coffee maker has no clock, and that means it has no means to start automatically at a specific time of day. There is no way to pause the brewing cycle, and that means you will be stuck waiting for the cycle to finish to completion before you can pour a cup of coffee. There is also no automatic shutoff and no control over the strength of the coffee. No permanent filter exists, and the inside of the filter basket takes time to clean. It is removable, but the grooves in the filter basket take effort to get clean, and this is especially true if the coffee maker has been neglected for some time following your last brewing cycle.
This Mr. Coffee device is very inexpensive, so one cannot expect much from it. I can live without the clock, timer, pause feature, etc. But at the very least, the Mr. Coffee CG12 Drip Coffee Maker should have an automatic shutoff feature. I learned about the lack of an auto shutoff the hard way. Having walked away for several hours, I came back to a coffee maker that was still turned on, with a slightly burnt aroma in the air. This greatly surprised me. I thought the auto shutoff was a standard feature among coffee makers, but apparently I was wrong.
The coffee brewed by the Mr. Coffee CG12 Drip Coffee Maker isn't the best, and this is mainly due to the lack of quality control. There is no way to adjust for lightness or darkness and the drip action doesn't seem to absorb the coffee grounds the way it should. The coffee came out tasting a little weak, even though I used slightly more coffee than was recommended for the number of cups I brewed.
Overall, the Mr. Coffee CG12 Drip Coffee Maker is a below- average coffee maker than I cannot recommend due to its sub-par brewing abilities, cheap construction, and lack of features. For just ten more dollars, a consumer can buy a much better coffee maker that offers auto shutoff, a timer, and more. It works, but I expect much more from a coffee maker than this, even if it does cost less than twenty dollars.
