When Coffee is Done, You Hear an Audible Alert!

Pros: Programmable and makes good coffee, but grounds constantly overflow the basket.
Cons: Over-flowing grounds require permanent and disposable filters. Do not overfill the reservoir (leaks happen).
The Bottom Line: After using this a year --- the constant bother of coffee grounds everywhere (including the coffee) is irritating! Designed poorly, so I lowered my rating.

When my Braun pooped out on me, I replaced it with a black Mr. Coffee UNX33 12-cup programmable coffeemaker. We decided to buy a Mr. Coffee because if they don't know how to make a good coffee maker --- who does? I checked out prices on the Internet and features, so I knew which model that I wanted and I knew that it would be $44.96 at Wal-Mart.
We had paid about $70 for the Braun five years ago, but it had required service when six month old and again after the warranty was expired.
EASY TO USE
The clock/timer feature was a requirement. Hubby prepares the coffee at night and we want it to be freshly brewed in the morning. We set the clock for 5:30AM. Unlike the clock in your car, it was very easy to set both the clock and the timer on this UNX33 model. There are clearly marked buttons for "Hour: and "Min" and an easy to read digital clock. When setting the time for the morning automatic, hold down the "Delay Brew" button as well.
2-Hour Auto Shut-Off This is a nice safety feature and provides the peace of mind that your coffee pot won't burn the house down while you are at work. Just before the pot turns off, an audible alert sounds five soft beeps to let you know that it is ready to turn off. When I first heard this, I thought, just what I need, more noise in my life. I have since changed my mind. For those without sight, this would be an excellent feature!
Brewing Pause 'n Serve allows you 30 seconds to grab a cup of coffee while it is brewing. Do not get a coffeepot without this feature! Although it does not take long to brew, perhaps 3-4 minutes --- I do not want to wait for every drop to fall.
EASY TO CLEAN
Dripless Carafe with Plastic Spout The cover is smaller and simpler than the cover on our Braun. So there are fewer corners/crevices to clean. Because of its shape, it pours easily without drips.
The Removable Filter Insert lifts out for easy access and cleaning. You can place it into your dishwasher. The unit takes the wide 8 to 12 cup filters. Unfortunately after months of use I find that you need to use both a permanent filter and disposable filters in this unit. The grounds are always overflowing the filters and getting into the rest of the coffee maker. Cleanup is very annoying.
PLUS
Adjustable Temperature Warming Plate I have never seen this on a coffee maker before! There is a temperature range for the warming plate. It is clearly marked with five variances that you can use. Did you ever come home and want to warm the left in the pot? Put it on high and it will heat up faster. Perhaps you like your coffee cooler than most warmers keep it --- this is the plate for you! Maybe you have hot cider in carafe and only like it slightly warm. The flexibility is built into this one.
1-4 Cup Small Quantity Setting I may never use this feature, but I like the flexibility of having it available to me. Time will tell. It lets you brew better coffee when making less than five cups.
Special Cleaning Cycle The sensor flashes when your coffeemaker needs cleaning. (Unfortunately with the grounds overflowing, this happens perhaps once a month.) A special cycle makes cleaning quick and easy. When ready to clean, use four cups of undiluted white household vinegar in the water reservoir. How frequently you clean your coffeemaker depends upon the hardness of your tap water and how often the grounds overflow. I always make my coffee with filtered water!
Audible Ready Signal alerts you when the brewing cycle is done and when the warming plate is about to shut off. While a quiet beep, I was able to hear it from the other room.
BAD FEATURE
This coffee make has a definite problem with coffee grounds over-flowing the filter and clogging the machine! I have never had such a problem with my other coffee makers. I use a permanent filter and the disposable filters.

¨ Water Window on the water reservoir allows you to quickly and accurately see exactly how much water you have added to the reservoir. The User Manual suggests that you do not use the decanter to measure the water. Guess what --- the decantur holds more than the reservoir will hold and it WILL OVERFLOW ONTO YOUR COUNTER TOP!
