Penguinlady's Full Review: Richard Atwater and Florence Atwater - Mr. Popper'...
This was one of my first books, and I immediately got hooked on penguins for life (check out my nickname...) I now have hundreds (none alive, unfortunately) in my house, to the dismay of my long-suffering husband, and it all started with Mr. Popper.
Mr. Popper, a mild-mannered house painter with a wife and two kids, has a Mitty-esque fantasy life that includes explorations to the far reaches of the earth. He writes a fan letter to Captain Cook, and then goes back to sloshing paint. A little while later, a large crate arrives on his doorstep, and he soon finds his house over-run with penguins.
I recall being as amused by his haplessness and his wife's frustration as she tried to keep a clean house amid a flock of penguins squawking all over the place, as I was by the plot itself. I also enjoyed his gentleness and willingness to let absurd things happen in his life. He personified "go with the floe" (pun intended) and I wished I could have lived in his house. (Still do, but don't tell my husband...) The illustrations are as amusing as the story.
This book has it all - plot, character, wit - and I've made sure that all the children of my acquaintance have a copy. Yours should too!
