| modernmarvel's Full Review: Mr. Sushi |
THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Mr. Sushi is located on Harvard Street in Brookline's Coolidge Corner. This is a vibrant area filled with shops and restaurants. There is some street parking and a couple of lots. The T's Green line also stops in the middle of the neighborhood.
MR. SUSHI OVERVIEW
Mr. Sushi is a 5 minute walk from two other sushi restaurants. There are another 10 in the immediate vicinity. The upscale restaurants are Fugakyu, around the corner, and Ginza, a few blocks down Beacon Street. Takeshima is similar to Mr. Sushi and is almost directly across the street. With all this competition, Japanese restaurants need to do something to stand out. Mr. Sushi's niche is reliability and price.
AMBIANCE
When you dine at Mr. Sushi, you don't feel like you are in Japan but you do know you are in a Japanese restaurant. There is a rooftop over the sushi bar and the traditional blue cloth hangings. The rest is really just tables with a few other Japanese decorations. The restaurant is on the smaller side, maybe 15 tables, with additional seating at the sushi bar. The tables have low wall dividers around them so that only 3-4 tables are in a section. This makes for more intimacy. It may also be the reason why the restaurant is fairly quiet, even on a busy night.
MENU
They serve all of the standard foods you expect in a Japanese restaurant and they do it consistently well. You are practically guaranteed to have a decent sushi experience here but don't expect wild or rare sushi. They also have the appetizers, such as shumai and edamame, and entrees, such as grilled fish and udon soup that you would expect to find. The desserts are a few asian-type ice creams such as red bean and green tea. There is an ice cream store one block up from Mr. Sushi if you want a better selection.
SERVICE
The service is consistently good. I suspect a lot of the waitresses are not comfortable with English so there is a lot of smiling and nodding. However, they are attentive, bring extra napkins when you need them, bring the entrees when the appetizers are done and the bill when are ready. What more can you ask for?
FAMILY FRIENDLINESS
I have seen a lot of families in the restaurant and I bring my kids. Because the area is on the T, Boston's public transportation, and easily accessible to Boston University and Boston College, there are a lot of college and graduate students. There is no special kids menu.
PRICE
Most of the asian restaurants in Brookline post their menus in the window. Since the offerings are similar, this invites competitive shopping. Mr. Sushi's prices are right up the middle. The sushi portions are a bit smaller than the higher-priced restaurants but the entrees are the same size. Given the location, consistent quality of the food and the service, the prices are a good value.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
Mr. Sushi tends to attract students, the 20-30 year old crowd and families. It isn't the dining experience you would find in upscale restaurants that provide elaborate decor and rare sushi you haven't had before. Instead, it is a comfortable, familiar place to have some traditional favorites at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend it.
OTHER NEARBY SUSHI OPTIONS
Takeshima is another Japanese restaurant across the street. It offers slightly lower prices and generous portions but the decor is very plain.
Fugakyu is very upscale dining about three blocks away. The prices are the highest in the neighborhood but the decor is amazing and the food is great.
Tsunami is also right around the corner and similar to Mr. Sushi in price.
A really fun place for anyone who loves Japanese Food is the The Japanese Mall in Cambridge. They have several Japanese food stalls, a Japanese supermarket, Japanese stores and a sushi restaurant.

Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations The sushi is value-priced, cheaper than other restaurants, but also a bit smaller. There is nothing too wild, lots of tuna and salmon. Everything on the menu is consistently good. Best Suited For: Kids and Families
