| 4paws's Full Review: Mrs Fields Cookie Book 100 Recipes FR Books |
Mrs. Fields Cookie Book (Subtitle:100 Recipes from the Kitchen of Mrs. Fields) was produced by Debbi Fields and the Editors of Time-Life Books in 1992. At the time I purchased the book, the retail price was $18.95. I, however, got it marked down at my local book store. Now that I have it, I can honestly say I would not have been disappointed if I had paid full price.
This is the first cookbook in which I can truthfully say I was interested in the Introduction. I had always had the mistaken notion that Mrs. Fields recipes came from a family in Sulphur, Oklahoma. We used to drive through the town on nearly all trips south from home when I was young. There was a restaurant in Sulphur (it may still be there) called Fields that made the dreamiest pies along with the rest of the good home-style cooking. We always stopped there to eat coming and going. When Mrs. Fields pies came out, I thought we in Oklahoma were probably the only ones who had them and were a spin-off from that restaurant. Many years later, I encountered a woman through a business arrangement who would bring me a Mrs. Fields pie each time she came to see me, as she was in that family and they did, indeed turn to mass marketing.
Now, I am really confused, but nonetheless continue to be a fan. The reason for my confusion? Well, the well-written introduction to this cookbook tells you about Debbie Fields. Sadly, she makes no mention of Oklahoma. She states that at the age of 13, she began cooking cookies for her family back in Oakland. That is all an departure from the book is of little consequence except to point out that sometimes the "Introduction" does have some interesting information. Thank goodness I didn’t automatically flip past.
She describes the difference between the recipes in the book, opposed to those sold commercially. There is a brief description of the equipment used in mass marketing that the average person does not have in their kitchen. She also explains that all recipes have been made in her home with her 5 daughters and that they have even contributed for ideas for cookies. An example is a cookie called "Jessica’s Marshmallow Cloud’s". Jessica had suggested that she thought it would be a good idea to wrap some chocolate dough around some marshmallow’s and voila! A recipe was born. Debbie Fields makes the cookbook sound like it came from your mother.
What’s my secret? She asks. "First I start with the best ingredients available—real butter, real vanilla, real chocolate chips, nothing artificial or imitation." She goes on to tell how she tests the cookies using the "touch" method.
The cookbook is divided into:
Drop Cookies
Fancy Cookies
Filled Cookies
Bar Cookies
Special Treats
The most important thing here is that all the recipes are delicious and simple to make. These factors alone make the book a "must own" for cookie monsters and people who love to cook or even those who want to begin. I can not emphasize enough how easy the cookies are to make. If you want to learn or if you have a child, this would be great book to have some fun in the kitchen.
