MSR BlackLite Gourmet Cookset

Written: Aug 28 '06 (Updated Aug 28 '06)
Pros:Non-stick, easy to clean, lightweight, good conductivity.
Cons:Not for group camping.
The Bottom Line: A great camping cook set for a small family.

I had been using some old pots and pans from my college days for my car camping trips and my small backpacking set for backpacking/car camping. The backpacking pots have a major flaw in that they are not Teflon coated nor are they big enough to cook more than two serving. So with an order from the wife, I pick out what I thought was the biggest backpacking pot/pan set that is made of Teflon. And this set fits the bill.

We have used this on several trips and have found it works perfectly for our car camping needs. I have not been in a situation where I needed a bigger pot (knock on wood). When that time comes I will probably get a huge cast-iron pot and use it in a campfire. But for our general everyday car camping needs, this set is big enough for my family.

What it comes with.
1.5 liter pot- 7 inches diameter, 2 7/8 inches deep
2 liter pot- 7.5 inch diameter, 3.25 deep pot.
fry pan- Simple 7.5 inch wide, 1.75 inch deep pan.
1 lid-The lid is designed to work with both pots and the pan. 7 7/8 inches diameter
2 pack towels- These are towels you can use in lieu of a sponge. They also protect the pots & pan from being scratched when you store it together.
Pan handler and case-All metal pat/pan gripper. This is your handle for all three containers. The case just protects the pots from being scratched when the handle is stored inside the pots.
Stuff sack- Just your basic Nylon stuff sack.

A comment on the towels
The towels serve a dual purpose, they not only can be used for cleaning but they also go in-between the pan/pots to protect the Teflon coating. A nice feature.

How it works.
The pots and pan are like any other pot/pan you will find in your kitchen. But there are differences. It is made out of aluminum to make them lighter. All of the pots fit into each other to save on space in you backpack or car. This unit also has Teflon and so far the Teflon is working perfectly with no signs of wear. But you do have to use them with plastic utensils. Whatever you do, DO NOT use metal utensils.
The pots/pan do not come with attached handles. Instead you have a detachable handle that attaches by clamping on the side of the pot/pan. The grip is pretty solid but keep in mind that the handle does not lock into place, you must physically grasp it in order for the handle to hold on to and pick up that pot/pan. The handle is not Teflon coated but so far I have not seen any damage done by the handle. And remember to put the handle inside its pouch so it doesn’t scratch the inside of a pot while in transport.

Main listed features
Complete lightweight set includes a nesting fry pan
Easy- cleaning: Non-stick coating makes cleanup a breeze.
Quick, Even-heating: Aluminum offers scorch-free cooking.
Blackened Exterior: Improves cooking times and saves fuel.
Grooved Bottoms: Keep pot centered on your stove.
Snug-fitting lid: Snap=lock handle folds down for easy packing.

My experiences and problems
So far I have had no problems or concerns. It is a very well made piece of equipment. The Teflon works perfectly. That means my wife is very happy and kept me out of the dog house. So far it has held up to some abuse and no scratches as of right now. But I use plastic utensils of course.
I have also been pleased with how quickly the water boils. Unlike my old pot, I have no problem getting a rolling boil or getting it hot for eggs/etc.
I have never had any problems with the detachable handle. It has always help securely with no wobble. It is a good design, lightweight, and easy to grasp.

Cleaning
Cleaning is very simple since it is Teflon based. Just use a little soapy water and wipe it down with a sponge. You do not want to use anything abrasive to clean it with, just a soft sponge or the towels the unit came with.

Durability
So far there is no damage. Very durable.
