MSRs IsoPro, designed for butane cartridge stoves, is a blend of iso-butane and propane that provides good stove performance from the beginning to the end of the life of the fuel canister. The IsoPro cartridges operate well in all kinds of weather, down to temperatures as low as 10° F degrees below zero (-23° C).
Weighing in at about 8 ounces or so, the cartridges are fairly light and very easy to pack due to their compact size. They provide a wide and solid base for stoves that fit into the self-sealing valve at the top of the canister.
Like all iso-butane cartridges, the iso-butane cools down as it is vaporized and used by the stove. This vaporization cools the canister and can in some situations cause the performance of your stove to decrease. Make sure you dont use any insulating sleeves on your cartridges and if youll be cooking for long periods of time carry an extra canister that you can switch out while you allow the first to warm back up. In general though, most users shouldnt experience this problem.
The IsoPro fuel canisters are not refillable and must be disposed of properly when they are finished. This is probably the biggest drawback to a canister stove having to lug out empty (though they are quite light empty) canisters during your hike.
Experiences
Ive been quite amazed by the ease of use that comes with MSRs IsoPro canisters. Being someone who spent years on stoves such as the Whisperlite or a Peak 1, Im used to trying to fill fuel bottles, wrestling with warm-up and priming procedures and more. But with the IsoPro you take your canister, screw on the stove, light a match and voila, youre ready to start cooking. The differences in setup and breakdown times are simply amazing. In addition the IsoPro is a ready-to-go fuel source that provides even and steady performance from the start of the canister to the end of it.
Final Thoughts
Better performing and in general easier to use than almost any other kind of backpacking fuel, MSRs IsoPro fuel canisters are easy to use, reliable and provide good performance from start to finish.
