MSR-Mountain Safety Research-Simmerlite White Gas Stove
Being an avid outdoorsman I am always looking for something that gives me an edge over my friends while out in the wilderness, being it skiing, snowboarding, camping, etc. When doing any of these activities it is a must to keep any extra weight that you might be carrying in your pack to a minimum. Weight was the number one reason that I chose the Simmerlite stove.
MSR claims that the Simmerlite is the lightest liquid fuel stove available today. I havent found another stove that could put an argument to that statement so lets just say its true. At a minimum weight of only 8.5 ounces, without accessories, you can see that weight shouldnt be an issue.
It is easy to assemble, stands up to the elements and is generally one of the best buys I have ever made.
Ease of Use
It doesnt get any easier than using the Simmerlite. You can be set up and have a quart of water boiled in less than five minutes. When your fuel bottle gets closer to empty that time will increase slightly do to the pressure left in the bottle but it still gets the soup on in a hurry.
It is recommended that you use white gas for this stove because it burns cleaner than other fuels.
How the Stove Works
When you open the valve on the fuel container it sends pressurized fuel through a tube into the burner. After a few moments that tube becomes hot enough to vaporize the fuel allowing the stove to function properly and burn more efficiently.
Cleaning is so easy that all you really have to do most of the time is turn the unit upside down and shake it.
Warranty
The Simmerlite comes with a limited 5-year warranty that will repair or replace the unit if it should fail. Obviously if you improperly use the stove the warranty is invalid.
My Experience with the Simmerlite
I absolutely love this stove. I spend a lot of time in the Sierra Mountains, mostly during ski season and this stove has literally kept me warm and toasty on more than one occasion.
We, my friends and I, have a secret hideaway at Heavenly Valley that we often congregate at during heavy days of snow. It is best when they close the mountain (a few times a year) and we go there to wait for the mountain to clear of tourists and the fresh snow to cover their tracks.
It is at this time that the Simmerlite becomes the focal point of the enclosure. There is absolutely nothing better than the looks on my friends faces as when I pull the Simmerlite out of the pack I have had on all day and start whipping up some soup or coffee to keep warm.
Summary
In closing I have to say that the Simmerlite is everything that MSR says it is and much, much more. I love it and believe anyone that would get this as a gift would love it too.
