fluffhead's Full Review: MSR Whisperlite Shaker Jet Backpacking Stove
I've had my whisperlite for a few years and it's a terrific stove. Really hot, really fast, really small, and really maintenance free. I've never had any trouble with it cooking anything. While you're friends are slaving over some bulky, complex contraption, you've got your whisperlite going in five minutes and water boiling in three.
Some drawbacks: Before you turn the stove off, look around you, ask if anyone wants to cook anything. Invariably, they'll say "no", you'll say, "are you sure? I'm turning the stove off.." They'll say they're sure. You turn it off, and.. "hey, can i throw this avocado on there?" The problem with this type of stove is that you have to wait for it to completely cool before you can light it again. You can try to light it right off the vaporized gas, but I, and MSR, don't recommend it. So there's that.
I also recommend picking up the adapter jet that lets this stove burn other types of fuel besides white gas. White gas is great and clean burning, but when you're out of the way and you run out, it might be quite a hike to the nearest REI.
Overall: a great stove for backpacking, especially if you modify it to burn other fuels. Just watch those last minute cooking decision-making friends of yours.. they'll ruin your day.
