I picked up four of these cups at B.J.'s Wholesale Club a few months ago for my daughter who was 19 months at the time. She was already in love with Dora so she was thrilled with the character tie-in. She also likes the cups.
THE CUPS
The cups are rigid plastic. There is a flexible rubber straw that threads through the screw-off top. The straw can be removed for washing. Adults will find that the tops easily screw on and off the base. Happily, my toddler has never been able to get one of the tops off. The cups are very sturdy and they have been dropped and occasionally thrown and they have never cracked or broken.
To use the cups, you simply fill in the cup and screw on the top. The tops have a rubbery straw that the child uses to drink from. When not in use, the child or adult can flip a lever on the top that conceals the straw and keeps it clean. I find these cups to be leakproof even in the open position. I like the fact that I can store them in the diaper bag with the straw protected from dirt and crumbs and other unidentifiable stuff floating around my diaper bag.
The cups are supposed to be insulated although I don't really find that to be the case. Maybe the keep the milk cold a little longer but I wouldn't pay extra for that feature.
OUR EXPERIENCE
My daughter loves these cups. She was able to master the sipping easily and found them easy to grip and easy to use. She also mastered the lever on the top to hide the straw and likes to flip the lever back and forth. Most of all, she loves the fact that Dora is on each of the cups.
One of the things I like about these cups is that the diameter of the base is small. This makes is easier for them to fit into cup holders in my stroller and car. We have had some other sippy cups that don't fit into the cup holders in the stroller and that makes them less portable for us.
WASHING
These cups are easy to wash. I unscrew the cover and wash the cup and top in the top rack of the dishwasher. I also pull the rubber straw out of the top and wash it in the utensil holder in my dishwasher. The straws seem to come clean this way but it would probably be more thorough to wash them by hand to make sure the water flows through the entire straw.
My only complaint about these cups and the reason I gave them 4 stars out of 5 is that it is difficult to thread the straw back into the cover. At first, it would take me up to 5 minutes to get the straw back in and I would get pretty frustrated. Now I am pretty good at it and I can do it in under a minute.
DURABILITY
When I first bought these cups, I was worried the rubber straws wouldn't hold up but they have. The only problem is that we have lost a couple of the straws, probably in the dishwasher. I wish I could easily buy replacement straws. Regular straws are not flexible enough to work with the latch on the top of the cup.
The cups themselves are thick, rigid plastic and they have made countless trips through the wash. Overall, I would say these cups are extremely durable.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
Overall, I really like these sippy cups. The character tie in is great and my toddler really likes using them. They stand up well in the dishwasher and I think I have gotten my money's worth out of them.
