| mommykd's Full Review: Munchkin White Hot Basic Spoons |
If I had reviewed these spoons 3 years ago, they would have received nothing but glowing compliments. However, since they are now being used again, I have a few issues with them that will not earn them a five star rating. Read on to find out what I am talking about
First of all, what am I talking about?
Munchkin White Hot Basic Spoons - designed for feeding an infant. From the website: Munchkin's White Hot® Utensils are the #1 softbite feeding spoons in the U.S. These spoons take the guesswork out of safely feeding your baby. The ingenious White Hot safety tips turn white to indicate that baby's food is too hot. Available in infant or toddler designs! They are designed to be gentle on a babys gums the bowl of the spoon is a coated/rubberized plastic and the handle is stainless steel. The handles even have a little heart engraved on them. These spoons are available in a variety of colors in 2 packs or 4 packs. Ours was a 2 pack pink and purple.
How does it work?
Makes it easier on the parents to test the temperature of babys food by turning white if babys food is too hot. The bowl of the spoon is the part that turns white.
Is it safe and gentle on babys gums?
As I said, if you had asked me 3 years ago when I used them to feed my daughter, I would have said yes absolutely! I fed her with these spoons and never had a complaint. So much so that I saved them just in case we decided to have another baby.
Well, that decision was made, and child # 2 arrived 10/28/03. He is now eating more than his fair share of baby food. Every time I use the Munchkin White Hot Basic Spoons he fusses when I am feeding him. He is also teething, so he will clamp down on the spoon. I have noticed that this is when he starts to get fussy. It is a forceful clamp too I cant feel what he is feeling, but the impression I get is that it must feel like biting down on a regular stainless steel spoon hard. He eats with no problem with the First Years Take and Toss Spoons. My husband swears its because the Munchkin spoons are pink and purple.
Does the white hot feature really work?
Yes. No. Maybe. It did work just fine and dandy. Obvious evidence would be when the spoons were removed from the dishwasher the bowl of the spoon would be totally white. It would gradually return to the correct color once it cooled. When placed in warmed baby food it would turn white if too hot, but return to correct color once stirred. As I have said, when used with my daughter, I had no problems with these spoons. However once again this time around is different. I have noticed that the white hot effect just doesnt seem to work anymore. The spoons still turn completely white when placed in the dishwasher, but they never return to the original color which leaves me guessing when I stir the warmed up baby foods. I can't tell if the color is a pale pink or purple or if it actually is turning white. I even tried placing one in my daughters bowl of rice last night to test it. The spoon never changed color at all, but when I touched the rice to double check, it was still hot to my touch.
Stain resistant?
Nope! Both spoons are stained from orange baby foods.
Overall?
Its a toughie I would have said Munchkin White Hot Basic Spoons are great when I used them with my daughter. Maybe they just arent meant to last through two children or for more than a year or two. However, now that I have tried using them with my son, and have discovered that what works for one may not necessarily work for the other, I would say they do not live up to their expectations. Since my son refuses to eat when fed with the spoon and it has nothing to do with the color - and since this review should be based on my most recent experience, Im not recommending these spoons.
