Pros: High quality forged blades and construction Very sharp edges Reasonable pricing ($12 each)
Cons: None, except perhaps less local availability. They are easily found on-line.
I'm serious about my cooking and my knives. For years, I've used Wusthof-Trident and Victorinox-Forschner.
Our original steak knife set had only 6 pieces, and we found that we needed more so that we'd have enough for entertaining etc. We also wanted to get a set that would be similar in look to our existing set - a traditional look with black handles and 3 rivets on the handle.
My first choice was Wusthof, but at $150 for four knives, I was hoping to find something else. Forschner had very good knives at an affordable price, but the handles were a more modern molded appearance. After a lot of research, I came across Mundial, who I had not heard of before. It's also difficult to find reviews of these knifes, so I was reluctant to buy without some way of knowing that these knives would be of quality. Then, I found Mundial's web site. It became apparent to me that this manufacturer took themselves very seriously and made many products for the consumer and professional.
So, I decided to take a bit of a chance, and bought 8 matching non-serrated traditional Mundial steak knives. These are also available with serrated blades. However, as you know all the very best steak knives use smooth-edged blades. They cost us $100 for 8 knives from cutleryandmore.com. Note: you must order the individual # that you want, as there are no sets available (except in serrated).
The knives arrived a few weeks ago and have seen a lot of use since then. I have to say that I'm extremely impressed and pleased with the quality and sharpness of these forged steak knives. They go through steak, ham, and chicken with the ease of the very best steak knives I have ever used, including Henkles and Wusthof. As an experiment, I even shaved with one to my satisfaction - these are very sharp knives!
In conclusion, Mundial makes excellent products. If you are looking to buy very high quality forged knives with a reasonable price tag, look no further. Take a chance and buy a few of their knives to experiment - their steak knives are only $11.95 each. And their Chef's knife is a mere $20.
Take my advice - buy their Chef's knife and one steak knife to see for yourself. You won't regret it.
