Hi Ho! It's Kermit The Frog Here!

Written: Aug 20 '03 (Updated Aug 23 '03)
Pros:It's Kermit!
Cons:None really
The Bottom Line: Very cute. Nice likeness of the famous Muppet. Wire in arms and legs makes him pose-able.

For some reason my little boy has loved Kermit since before he even knew who Kermit was. Just after he turned 1 he saw an image of Kermit on our computer screen and went nuts, smiling and pointing at the cheerful green frog. I had been on the lookout for a good-looking Kermit stuffed animal since then, but couldn't find any. Now my son is older and wiser. He just turned two, and we have a video of The Muppet Show that he likes to watch. As luck would have it, Sababa Toys finally came through for me with their adorable 18-inch Kermit Plush!

Product Description:

Sababa Toys' Kermit looks like, well, Kermit! He stands 18 inches tall and is a very good likeness of the famous Muppet. He is completely covered in polyester fabric (including his eyeballs, which I figured would just be plastic). His body and head are soft, plush, and cuddly. His long, skinny arms and legs are plush too, but also have wire on the inside, so you can position them and they will stay in-place. His hands and feet have no stuffing -- they are just some floppy fabric (although there is something in his feet to keep them mostly-stiff). His eyes are hard, but they are covered with soft fabric. His mouth is open (you can close it, but it won't stay that way).

Kermit is stuffed with all new materials (100% polyester fibers). He is surface washable only, which means you cannot just throw him in the washing machine (unfortunately).

The removable tag that was attached to Kermit's hand states that the toy is for children ages 5 and up, however the non-removable tag on Kermit's rear says it not for children under the age of 3 (I assume that Kermit's eyeballs could be pulled off if you tried hard enough, and that would indeed pose a choking hazard).

Sababa Toys has a whole line of 18-inch Stuffed Plush Muppets. Also available are Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Beeker, and Animal. I was most tempted to also get Animal, but my boy doesn't care for Animal too much currently, so I'm waiting a bit.

Our Experiences:

My boy tends to not like stuffed animals at all, but Kermit is different. Kermit is more like a friend. He and my son will sit together to watch a video. My boy will have a little chat with Kermit about his day. It is downright amusing to see the two of them together. It probably has something to do with Kermit's build -- unlike most stuffed animals he has long arms and legs and is proportioned more like a person than, say, your average teddy bear might be. At 18 inches tall, Kermit is tall enough to be a buddy to my kid, but not so tall that he's unwieldy or at all threatening. Since he's mostly arms and legs he's very light and easy for my boy to carry around as well.

My little guy doesn't sleep with Kermit, however he is quite snuggly and would be a good bed-time buddy for an older child. The only hard things on him are his eyes. I would definitely not let younger kids sleep with him though (you don't want one of those long legs to get wrapped around anything).

Kermit, with those long skinny legs, cannot stand on his own, but this doesn't bother us at all. In fact, with those pose-able arms and legs, he is a ton of fun just sitting down. My husband and I both get into the act -- whenever my boy is asleep we set Kermit up in a different spot in the house. My husband likes putting him into odd positions (feet behind his head, etc), I like putting him in odd places. Now my boy squeals with delight whenever he finds Kermit in his location-of-the-day. You can make him so cute -- sitting with his legs crossed and his hands on his knee...

Quickie Summary:
Pros:

+) It's Kermit! A very good likeness of him too.
+) He's plush and very huggable
+) Wire in his arms and legs allow you to position him in a variety of fun and amusing ways
+) Lightweight and easy to tote
Cons:
-) Surface washable only
-) Eyeballs could pose a choking hazard to younger toddlers

Final Thoughts:

I've gotta admit it, I used my child as an excuse to buy Kermit for myself. He was just so darn cute. Thankfully my kid is a big Kermit fan too. I really like Sababa Toys' 18" Kermit Plush. The likeness is excellent, and the pose-able arms and legs make him a lot of fun! He's very cute, and I'm glad we've got him around the house.
