Pros: Adjustable wheels, cuts nice 22 inch swath.
Cons: More priming needed. Not made as well as earlier models.Hard to start. Guzzles gas.
The Bottom Line: Wouldn't buy it again. Too hard to start. Try one out first before you buy. Would spend more for easier starting.

| suzig's Full Review: Murray 22-Inch Side Discharge Mower |
I had an old Murray, same hp, that I used for over 10 years. That was a great old dinosaur, and started up with first pull everytime! Never had to prime it (didn't have a primer), and I neglected it with poor care, but it was faithful to me everytime. I had the handle wired together because part of it broke. BUT, it finally died an honorable death.
Thus, I thought I would purchase another Murray, same thing, just a new version. Wrong on my part for thinking it would really be the same. But haven't you noticed that about many newer products, just not as substantially built, and more use of plastic in the manufacturing of them.
I bought this new Murray at the beginning of 2003 summer. I used it only twice last summer because I couldn't get the thing started. I would prime it just like it said, three times, but it wouldn't start. I couldn't pull the cord hard enough either. I gave up, and bought a NEW manual mower. It was difficult to do my yard that way, but I did.
This summer I decided to get this new Murray back out and was determined to use it or throw it in the trash. I had a mechanic check it over. He said it was okay, but needed more priming, and the cord was tough to pull. So, now I can use it, but have to prime it FIVE times instead of the three. And I have to be in great physical shape to pull the cord....ha! It cuts okay, but doesn't give me the best groomed yard in town. I have noticed it does use more gas than my old one did. With price of gas, that is more noticeable with the trips to the station with the can.
In defense of this newer Murray, it does have adjustable wheels for cutting height, and several heights are available. With no throttle, it works at one speed. Once it has started, it has not died during the job. My old one would balk at times in thick wet grass, but that was expected.
The cut swath is ample at the 22 inch, and it does seem to cut nearly to the edges. I would like to get a little closer to yard edging, but that is just the way mowers are.
I sure do wish I had kept my old Murray in better repair, it might have lasted a few more years. Moral: if you have a good thing, take care of it. They don't make them like they used to!
