Of the many Christmas gifts my now 19 month old son, Tristan, received recently during the 2001 holiday season was a new twist on a classic toy that children have enjoyed for generations: the Playskool Music 'n Lights Sit 'n Spin. I remember spinning around until I was sick on one of those older standard (nonmusical) versions many years ago as a child. Of course doing such a thing now as an adult does not sound very entertaining at all, yet most young toddlers and preschoolers love to laughingly spin around until they are dizzy before falling onto the floor. And Tristan is no exception. So as I was shopping for gifts last year, I found this Playskool toy available at my local Wal-Mart for $19.97 and instantly knew this would make the perfect gift for my little spinner. And over the past month, the Playskool Music 'n Lights Sit 'n Spin has certainly been worth every penny that was paid, and then some.

Recommended for toddlers and preschoolers ages 1 1/2 years to 5 1/2 years, the Playskool Music 'n Lights Sit 'n Spin is a musical toy with rotating yellow base measuring approximately 18 inches in diameter and 10 inches in height. Packaged in a rather thin medium sized box, this toy does require adult assembly with six included screws (replacement screws may be purchased at most hardware stores) and the use of a Phillips screwdriver by following the simple directions located inside, which was accomplished by my husband in about five minutes tops. Requiring three size "AA" alkaline batteries (not included) for the music and lights to be activated inside the rounded wheel section when properly assembled, the Playskool Music 'n Lights Sit 'n Spin is constructed of durable yet colorful plastic materials that will keep your little one entertained for hours. The yellow base has the words Playskool and Sit 'n Spin printed inside the non-skid areas designed to keep those small bottoms in place while they spin. The green post attaches this base to the smaller purple, green, and yellow wheel containing the music and lights.
~~~The Music 'n Lights~~~
Press any of the four round red buttons located on the top of the wheel to activate the music and lights found on the Playskool Music 'n Lights Sit 'n Spin. One of nine classic childrens songs will be begin playing through four speaker areas located on the wheel with every press while the four blinking lights flash in succession along with the music. To change from one song to another during play, simply press one of the four red buttons until the desired musical tune is found. Unfortunately, there is no "on-off" switch much to most parents' dismay, but thankfully the volume is not very loud and one same tune is not played over and over again like you'll find with many other musical toys found on the market today. Here is a listing of the nine songs the Playskool Music 'n Lights Sit 'n Spin contains:
Jenny Lind Polka
She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain
Polly Wolly Doodle
William Tell Overture
Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
Are You Sleeping?
~~~How to Ride~~~
Playing with the Playskool Music 'n Lights Sit 'n Spin is simple. The child sits on the yellow base facing the green and yellow wheel trimmed in shiny purple plastic while crossing his or her feet on the opposite side for support. To spin, all the child has to do is hold on to the wheel with his or her hands and pull in one direction or the other. The base then rotates 180 degrees round and round fast or slow, depending on the manual pace set by your child. During play, the music and lights most likely will be activated, but they are not required if parents tire of the sounds and decide to take the batteries out or do not replace them when they finally die. While there is no weight limit stated on the Playskool Music 'n Lights Sit 'n Spin, I have found that this durable toy holds a 5'4" 140 pound woman quite well with no trouble at all! Once Tristan saw how much fun Mommy was having on his new toy, he realized what he was supposed to do with it right from the start and practically pushed that overgrown child right off so that he could have his turn. And countless times since, I've found him playing on his new toy several times a day until he is dizzy with laughter.
If you prefer the more classic toys for your child that require physical interaction, purchasing the Playskool Music 'n Lights Sit 'n Spin for your young toddler or preschooler would make a great choice. The music and lights make a clever addition in an age where children's toys seem to be required to do or say something to be of any true interest, but they are by no means required for your child to have a wonderful time playing with this interactive toy. While all that spinning would most certainly make all but those with the strongest of stomachs a bit dizzy and queasy in no time at all, most children seem to love the sensation of spinning round and round to their heart's content. While it's awkward size makes the Playskool Music 'n Lights Sit 'n Spin a bit difficult to store when not in use, especially if you are pressed for extra space, I still highly recommend it as a much needed energy outlet for young children, especially in the winter months when chances to play outside are few and far between. So take a look at this super classic model the next time you are shopping at your favorite discount store and decide for yourself. Chances are, your little spinner will enjoy this purchase just as much as mine has so far!
