My American Girl “the friend U create and celebrate online” evolved from the original American Girl Just Like You Doll. This doll is recommended for children 8 and up. As with other 18” AG dolls, the over 40 variations of this somewhat personalized doll have: cloth bodies, eyes that open and close, hair – or no hair option, and the traditional moveable vinyl head arms and legs.

Currently retailing for $110.00, My American Girl includes: the selected 18” doll, a pre-selected outfit, a charm keeper necklace and access codes for online play at innerstarU.com – exclusive site for doll recipient and their My American Girl Doll. The included outfit is: a pink tee with print, a skirt, underwear, and boots.
Although pricey, there is no denying that these are popular dolls, and I can personally attest to the longevity factor these dolls hold. Through the years I have purchased at least four different personalized American Girl dolls, and several other AG versions. Every doll has arrived as advertised or described on the internet site americangirl.com.
The dolls and clothing items are high quality. Because of the appreciation owners behold for their AG dolls, it is easy for me to highly recommend this doll.
Is It Just Like You? or What you Get for $110.00?
Originally introduced in 1995 as the Just Like You Doll, this particular doll is now marketed as the My American Girl, an update that occurred in 2010. Although the name changed, and a few personalization features have been revamped, this personalized doll is the same 18” cloth bodied version purchased years ago for my children. Through the years the included outfit has changed, understandably as AG coins the outfit as contemporary, and certainly styles evolve.
While there are personalization options for the doll design, they are somewhat limited; therefore I appreciate the name change from Just Like You to My American Girl. You select the Look: Hair Color, Eye Color, and Hair Style. There are approximately: 10 Blond, 7 Red, 25 Brown and 7 Black hair variations – 11 Blue, 20 Brown, 4 Green, and 6 Hazel eye variations – 29 straight or 11 wavy & curly hair variations: over 40 variations. As you navigate through the selections, the style variations diminish as you select hair color, eye color and hair style. For example if you select brown hair, brown eyes and straight hair, the selection is narrowed to 13 doll variations. Included in these are three skin tones: light, medium or dark.
As mentioned, the selected doll, currently retailing for $110.00, includes: the 18” doll, the pre-selected outfit, a charm keeper necklace and access codes for online play at innerstarU.com (exclusive site for doll recipient and their My American Girl Doll). Currently the outfit, referred to as a True Spirit, is a pink tee with darker pink print, a gray skirt, underwear, and tall boots. These clothing items are high quality, with admirable attention to detail.
After selecting the hair and eye color, and hair style, the purchaser is offered a few more unique selections: earrings, glasses, braces. Doll ear piercing is 14$. You are allowed to interactively try glasses on your doll, navigating through choices and if selected, this option adds 10$. Selection of braces will set you back another 14$: includes three sheets of stick-on braces, headgear, pretend retainer and a fake electronic toothbrush. Add all three and your doll will cost 148$
Additionally American Girl offers dolls with no hair, or they will allow you to ‘admit’ a current doll to the American Girl Doll hospital, where the current head will be replaced with a hairless version. Other options at the hospital include: wellness check, hearing aid, new head, Reattachment of head, new body, reattachment of limbs, and eye replacement. There are online tutorials for hair styling, and if you reside in an area with an American Girl Storefront there are in store hair salons for these and other American Girl dolls. Also, American Girl offers glasses for approximately $10.00.
Of course there are various other personalization options available via additional purchases. This is the area that I don’t stay loyal to the AG brand, as there are massive other options, some less expensive and certainly many more options via crafty vendors.
With the change to My American Girl in 2010, Innerstar University was introduced: InnerstarU.com full access is included with the My American Girl doll purchase. This internet opportunity offers games, awards, and activities, providing a modern attribute. Although I have not personally used the site – ummm… it is intended for the child – I am told by the gift recipient that it is “way fun fun fun!” Her mother states that this option makes the doll worth the monies and turns it into an interactive experience, expressing that option adds personalization.
Whereas previous purchases of the Just Like You Doll were for my daughters, this updated My American Girl was purchased for gift purposes. The A3-F1225 version comes with: Light skin, black-brown hair, brown eyes. Admittedly I did not remove this doll from the box; it was for gift-giving. However I have witnessed play with the doll and much to my delight this version is just as durable as every other AG doll I have purchased. Importantly the little girl who now owns this doll adores it, and that smile plus the thankfulness she expressed, was worth the monies spent!
Need to Be Ready to Spend $
As with many toys, recommended age is a guide, only you know if your child is ready to own an expensive doll. Certain children will be ready at a younger age, some older, it really depends on the individual child and also the adult purchaser attitude toward proper versus non-proper use. If after spending over 100$ on a toy doll you will become enraged over an undressed, marred up, or hair tangled doll – and that is the play trends of the intended recipient – perhaps you should wait. However if it matters not how the child plays, or perhaps the young kiddo is already meticulous about doll care, children as young as three might enjoy these dolls. Because of the probable choking hazards from small doll accessory and/or clothing parts, I would not allow those under three to play with the My American Girl Doll. The younger child might appreciate an American Girl Bitty Baby.
My American Girl Doll is award winning: 2010 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award, PTPA Winner’s Seal of Approval, 2010 Parents’ Choice Approved Award and 2010 NAPPA Honors Award.
