Type O Negative, more than just a blood type ...
Chances are that if you were to ask a hundred people what they loved about the group - most of the females would say Peter Steele and most of the males would say something to the effect of “there’s plenty of goth chicks at the shows”. When you cut out the casual fans that are in it for the shock value and the teens and tweens that think Hot Topic is the mecca of cool you are left with a handful of people that love the music. Yeah, any of the guys in the group could be considered eye candy depending on what gets you off but at the end of the day if there’s no talent to back up the image you have a pretty superficial scenario to deal with. One of the most redeeming things about the group is that they have stood the test of time; literally not caring what critics have to say about their releases and putting on killer shows for the fans. To me Type O is more than just four guys that get together and make music; they create something beyond music - something that makes you think. I spent a lot of time trying to track down this single, for me it was a mission. Even though I have all the songs on other releases I wanted to get this for the cover and well, because it’s a Type O disc.

From the 60’s keyboards to the steady and kitchy beat, this has to be one of my all time favorite booty shaking songs from the group. If you hear this song and aren’t thinking nasty thoughts then you better check your wrist for a pulse. This is one of the songs that got the group into a bit of hot water with some women; they heard the song and took it as a word for word translation that the group were nothing but gutter minded filth pigs. Just as boys will be boys, men will be men - but come on, it’s just a song. The origins of it are still a bit clouded with none of the guys really wanting to give away the big secret behind it but one of the juiciest stories is of Pete walking in to a room and seeing his girlfriend kissing another girl ... and you can guess where that led. The video for it is a little disappointing - I wanted to see a little more action but hey, I just write the reviews, not direct the videos. All in all it’s a fun track that shows the groups lighter side ... but under the psychedelic beat there is a nice “slice of nasty” to enjoy

One of Type O’s most ominous songs has to be “Black Sabbath”, it’s sung from the perspective of Satan and if you’ve never heard it, you can’t call yourself a fan of the group. Laced with somewhat cheesy background effects, it’s a dark, ominous track that is sure to shake the goodie goodies from their mortal coil. If the actual lyrics don’t scare the crap out of you, the chanting of “Ave Ave Satanas” will. This was the first time that the song appeared on a Type O release until “The Least Worst” hit the market in 2000. Consider this a seduction of innocence. You really have to read the lyrics to get the whole point of the song - that’s one of the reasons why I have to laugh when people get on their soapbox and say that the group is comprised of satanists. The last line of the song sums it up best, “Worship the sun, worship no one”. Just because the song is sung from the perspective of Satan or Lucifer doesn’t mean that the members of the group are sitting there hacking up chickens and goats. This is one of their most misunderstood songs but it is something that you have to listen to at least once to full appreciate all the work that went into creating it.

Taken from their groundbreaking Bloody Kisses release, “Blood & Fire” is a goth girls dream come to life. When it was first released everyone said that this was the best track on the CD; it’s good but it isn’t the best. It’s one of their “everlasting love” songs, something that transcends death. A lot of Bloody Kisses revolved around this theme which made it so damn appealing to the goth girls. This is what also helped to make Peter Steele a icon - that deep voice, dark eyes and guttural growl [yeah, I gotta admit, he is pretty hot] - but that’s just the top layer of skin. Without the music from the rest of the group it would just be some allegory about death. Even though I am a huge fan of the group and love them to death [no pun] some parts of this song are just too cheesy for me to take it seriously. Did we really need the fake French accent?

The Bottom Line
One of the most redeeming things about this single is that it has songs from three different ‘eras’ of the group so you get a nice mix of things. This is extremely hard to find in the United States and chances are you will have to order it from overseas if you want to get your hands on it. You can expect to pay between $7.00 and $15.00 for this if you order it overseas; if you have friends at a radio station they might be able to get you a copy of it but to be completely honest, most stations pitched them because Type O isn’t exactly what most rock stations play. Now, the cover photo ... the cover of the single features Shane and Maddie [Madalyn] Night with Peter in a rather provocative position. There was a lot of controversy about the photo and tons of rumors about what happened when the photo shoot was going on. If you ask Pete what happened, all he does is break out in a huge smile and says that he has no comment but you know that at least half the rumors are true or he wouldn’t turn beet red. Come on Pete ... we know you are packing some serious heat [thanks to that Playgirl issue where you bared it all] now all we want are the details!
