| kjscrafts's Full Review: Edward Moore Kennedy et al - My Senator And Me: A ... |
This book is written by Senator Edward M. Kennedy and the character is based on his dog, Splash who often is with his the Senator. The book may be fictional in that it is a dog telling the story, but it is non-fiction in that it is an educational book about Washington, D.C. and the U.S. government. The book is also a little bit of a biography about Edward M. Kennedy and his dog, Splash. It starts with explaining the process of being elected to serve as a Senator. It then sidetracks into the story about how the Senator adopted Splash, the dog. This includes Splash talking about the major places (such as White House and Kennedy Center) in D.C. that the Senator points out on their ride home from the farm he was adopted from. Then the story finally gets into discussing the life of a dog that accompanies the Senator to work by narrating about a typical day. This includes waking up the Senator, the morning meeting with the staff, riding the underground tram, attending a press conference, attending a conference committee session, and voting on a bill. Throughout the story there are little side notes that is off topic, but help tell the story through the dogs eyes such as getting a treat on the tram. These I think are fine, but the four or five pages in the beginning about how he was adopted are so long and off topic that they just do not fit into the story very well with the main topic supposedly being about the daily life of a Senator. This story just distracts and takes the book too long to get into what it is about, especially when it is not all that long of a book in the first place. I will give this book credit, though, for being an unique plot that will hold many kids attention as they learn about the Senate. The last page of the book is also nice in that it outlines the steps of a bill becoming a law.
