The Bottom Line:

Justin Bieber’s My World is a good debut cd

Justin Bieber is a Canadian singer who hit the scene around 2009.  He is a teen sensation.  Justin Bieber was discovered by singer Usher.

My review
I bought Justin Bieber’s cd My World because I heard a lot about how Usher discovered him so I was curious to hear his music.  I have bought a lot of cds by teen stars who end up fading away.  I was afraid that would happen with Justin Bieber, but I took a chance anyway.  I’m glad I took a chance because it’s a good cd.  I wasn’t expecting to like it too much, but I was pleasantly surprised.

My World is a mix of pop and r&b music.  I love to listen to r&b and pop so I’m glad he sang this type of music.  This cd doesn’t have the hits like his follow up cd, but the songs are good.  Justin’s songs are about relationships.  I respect the fact that the writers didn’t give him material that’s too grown up for him.

Speaking of the songwriters, Justin worked with C. Tricky Stewart, Dernst “D’Mile” Emile, Ezekiel Lewis, Usher as well as others.  Justin also wrote a few songs on the cd.  Usher is also a guest vocalist on the cd.

Justin’s vocals are good.  He sounds similar to the way most teenagers sound before they reach adulthood.  He sounds a little like a young Michael Jackson in my opinion except that I don’t forget that I’m listening to a teenager when I hear his music.  Michael Jackson makes me forget that he was a kid when I listen to his older music.

My main complaint about the cd is that it’s short.  The cd contains only seven songs.  That is not enough in my opinion.  A cd should contain at least 10 or more songs to be worth the price.  I spent about $10 on the cd and that was too much for my taste.

The breakdown
Ballads
Down To Earth
has a pop beat.  The music is pretty.  The piano drums and guitar drive the music.  Justin has a nice voice for ballads so this song works.  I like how he belts at points in the song.  I have no complaints.  One Less Lonely Girl has a pop/r&b beat.  The music reminds me of something that Ne-Yo would write.  I love how he sings in time with the music.  He sings the song with a lot of soul considering his age.  I like how he sings in his lower register in the background.  I have no complaints.  First Dance (featuring Usher) has an r&b beat.  The music is infectious.  It sounds like something, but I can’t put my finger on it.  Usher basically sings ad libs in the song while Justin sings the song.  I like how Justin holds a little note at the end of the bridge.  I didn’t expect it and I was pleasantly surprised.  I have no complaints.

Dance songs
One Time
has an r&b/pop beat.  The music is catchy.  It makes me want to bop my head to the beat.  Justin sings in time with the beat.  He does sound pretty young on this track, but his vocals are good.  Favorite Girl has an r&b/pop beat.  The drums drive the music.  I love how he sings in time with the infectious beat.  He sounds like a young Michael Jackson on this track.  I love the flow of the chorus.  Justin sings the chorus and he does ad libs in the background.  This is one of my favorite songs on the cd.  Bigger has a pop/r&b beat.  The drums dominate the music.  I wasn’t sure how I would feel abut the song, but it works for Justin.  The song is age appropriate for him.  He talks about how he was little.  It works because he’s a kid.  I like how he slows down the bridge and speeds things up again.  Love Me has a pop/dance beat.  The drums and keyboards drive the music.  I can’t sit still when I hear it.  Justin sings in his lower register.  I liked how he showed some versatility in the song.  I love how he sings the chorus as well as the verses in time with the drumbeat.  I like how he belts towards the end of the song.

In conclusion
I was pleasantly surprised by Justin Bieber’s cd My World.  It was a pretty good debut cd.  In my opinion, there’s no filler on the cd.  I can listen to all of the songs without skipping anything.  I am glad that I took a chance on this cd because I really enjoyed it.  I highly recommend it.

My rating
I give this cd 5 stars because it’s a pretty good cd.
