Myerss dark rum is a product of the nation of Jamaica and has been produced since 1879. Often added to tropical drinks, this rum is a popular choice at tourist destinations and in restaurants and bars that feature a tropical theme.
Basic Characteristics of This Rum:
This rum is medium brown in color with good clarity and an aroma that reminds me of caramelized sugar, alcohol, and hints of woodiness. The product pours smoothly and leaves just a think layer of lace on the sides of your glass as you drink.
Distilled using the age- old pot still method, this rum is made from sugar cane, fermented naturally, and then aged in oak barrels. This time- consuming process produces rum that is dark and rich, with the tastes of molasses, caramel, sugar, and a slight amount of burntness.
Myerss Original Dark Rum is produced by Fred L. Myers & Son and imported to the United States through the Myers operation in Baltimore, Maryland. The alcohol content by volume is forty percent (80 proof).
Drinks Made with This Liquor:
Myerss Rum can be substituted in any recipe that calls for regular light rum, but it is especially good in drinks where a rich, heavy duty level of flavor is desired for the best taste possible. Here is a list of some drinks you can make with this rum:
Myerss & Cola
1.5 oz. Myerss Rum
6 oz. Cola
A popular favorite, you make this drink by pouring the rum over ice in a tall glass and then pouring the cola on top
Myerss & Tonic
1.5 oz. Myerss Rum
6 oz. Tonic Water
Pour rum over ice in a tall glass. Add tonic water
Sharkbite
1.5 oz. Myerss Rum
6 oz. Orange Juice
Grenadine Syrup
Pour rum over ice in a tumbler glass. Add orange juice to fill and then add a splash of grenadine syrup.
Hurricane
1.5 oz. Myerss Rum
3 oz. Pineapple Juice
3 oz. Orange Juice
Grenadine Syrup
Pour rum over ice in a tall glass. Add equal volumes of pineapple and orange juices, then add a splash of grenadine.
Jamaican Pina Colada
1.5 oz. Myerss Rum
2 oz. Pineapple Juice
1 oz. Cream of Coconut
Combine all of the above ingredients in a blender with one- half cup of crushed ice and blend at low speed until desired consistency is reached.
Chocolate Mint Rum
1 oz. Myerss Rum
.5 oz. Dark Crème de Cacao
.25 oz. White Crème de Cacao
.5 oz. Light Cream
Shake all ingredients with ice and then strain into cocktail glass.
Final Thoughts:
Myerss Original Dark Rum is the best- selling imported dark rum in the United States. This rum can often be found in fine restaurants and in well- stocked bars across the land. It is especially popular in tropical drinks, which isnt surprising given that it is produced on the island of Jamaica. Throughout the Caribbean and in other warm- weather destinations, bottles of Myerss dark rum are commonplace. This rum is often specifically requested by devotees to the brand who wouldnt even consider anything else in their favorite rum beverage.
Myerss dark rum is richer than lighter rums and similar to most other dark rums except for one area: the finish. Even though this product is equal in alcoholic strength to other brands of dark rum, it doesnt have quite the harshness in the finish that is so commonplace in other dark rum. If you ever try a sip of this product straight from the bottle, you will understand what Im talking about. The sweetness is there, and there is, of course, a dry woody character in the finish. But this product doesnt have the rush of alcohol in the finish that often produces coughing and can trigger ones gag reflex. It manages to remain smooth.
In spite of the smoothness, this rum still packs a good amount of clout in the taste department. I prefer Myerss dark rum to most light rums in the majority of drinks, tropical and otherwise (with a few exceptions). I really enjoy the woodiness and the molasses- like and caramelized sugar taste that this rum imparts on whatever it is mixed with. Mixed with a glass of cola, this flavor makes almost the perfect companion to the taste of this common soft drink. Add a little bit of lime and you have a Cuba Libre- a drink that is even more good- tasting than the standard rum and cola that so many barflies and restaurant diners order when they want a beverage with rum. This liquor also makes for a very tasty dessert when added to cakes and certain candies. I have been to some fancier restaurants where Myerss Rum Cake was one of the items on the dessert menu, much to the excitement of the rum fanatics with whom I was dining.
Myerss Original Dark Rum is a little more expensive than other dark rum and this fact alone might discourage some shoppers from giving it a try. A 750 ml bottle retails for about $18 while a full liter sells for about $23. There are many other dark rums on the market that cost less, but Myerss Rum is considered by many to be worth the extra cost. I know many people who swear by this rum. Some are so hooked on Myerss that they will switch to a different drink and different type of liquor if the bar or restaurant they are visiting doesnt offer Myerss.
Overall, Myerss Original Dark Rum is a very good product that livens up most any mixed drink calling for rum as an ingredient. Im not quite as crazy about this product as some of the Myerss rum groupies out there, but I can still agree that this product is better than the average dark rum and worth the extra cost for an occasional alcoholic beverage treat. The slow distilled process, the natural fermentation, and the aging in oak barrels make this rum one worth seeking out.
