Myers Original Dark Rum, With Recipes on the Back

Written: Mar 02 '05 (Updated Jun 02 '08)
Pros:The best in rum drinks
Cons:Expensive to have every day and we do.
The Bottom Line: This rum has a special aroma and taste that makes our best tasting Rum Drinks.

My wife will not have any rum drink unless it has Myer's Original Dark Rum. well if she's away and she doesn't have a choice, well... I understand why she loves this rum. It has body and flavor that is lacking in many other rums we have tried.

We started having this dark rum pretty much exclusively except for a brief run with Bermuda's Gosling's Black Seal rum. It started on one of our four trips to the island of Jamaica. It is in the city of Kingston that the company was founded in 1879.

The Bottle

The front label of this dark coloured and distinctive bottle is definitely a reminder that it is from that island nation. It has colourful Caribbean style art-work that depicts a plantation distillery with a few barrels of rum in the foreground.

The label tells us that the rum continues to be distilled in the traditional pot still method and allowed to age in white-oak barrels. It is this final aging period that plays a critical role in determining the distinctive dark colour and rich, buttery flavor that is synonymous with Myer's

Favorite Drinks

My wifes favorite drink, aside from a good Margarita, is a Myer's Rum and Coke. She adds a piece of lime and the drink is complete. If we are on any of the Spanish speaking islands like the Dominican Republic or perhaps the Yucatan coast of Mexico the name Cuba Libre comes into play. That's what they call a rum and coke with lime. Over the years we have found that it's nearly impossible to get lemons in these areas. Lime is the fruit that is available. But again you must ask for Myer's Original Dark Rum for that extra special good taste.

I share these Cuba Libre drinks with her often. I also enjoy this rum straight at times. Lacking brandy in our household at times, I find this a wonderful substitute for warming the inners on a cold winter's day.

Recipes

The following are recipes for Myer's drinks that are listed on the back of the bottle.

Myer's Sharkbite Pour 1 1/4 ounce Myer's rum over ice in a tumbler glass. Fill with orange juice. Add a splash of granedine and stir.

Myers and Cola (or Tonic) Pour 1 1/4 ounce Myer's Original Dark Rum over ice in tall glass. Fill with Cola (or Tonic). Garnish with a slice of lemon or lime.

Myer's Sunset Pour 1 1/4 ounce Myer's Original Dark Rum over ice in tall glass. Fill with equal parts pineapple juice and orange juice. Add a splash of grenadine and stir

Myers Pina Colada In a blender combine 1 1/4 ounces Myers Original Dark Rum, 1 ounce cream of coconut (from can), 2 ounces unsweetened pineapple juice, 1/2 cup crushed ice. Blend at low speed. Pour into goblet Garnish with pineapple stick and cherry.

Unique Taste

I've had many different brand rums. There is something very different about Myer's Original Dark Rum that sets it apart from others. Even as I open the twist top bottle it is noticeable. The Aroma immediately hits you. It has a sweet smell that is picked up across a room. I always know my wife is drinking a Cuba Libre without ever seeing her make the pour or see the glass. The aroma permeates the room, that's good 'cause it smells great, but watch out!! Don't expect just a sweet tasting girly drink when trying it straight. It has a smooth buttery molasses beginning and a good bite that once again smooths out without any bitter aftertaste. This rum will quickly warm the insides.

When pouring the rum, note the pleasing caramel colour. When drunk you'll see a lace clinging to the glass not unlike a Sambuca look but with a hint of colour. It will dry to a slightly sticky consistency.

Last Call

I can pretty much claim that Myer's Original Dark Rum is the only rum of choice for a Cuba Libre. The taste it gives is distinctive and delicious. Myer's is definitely more expensive than most other rum but it is VERY well worth the extra dollars.
