MY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS PRODUCT
I have used this to treat two types of severe heartburn. Once when I was hospitalized for treatment of another condition, I developed a peptic ulcer from the side effects of a drug I was taking. I also have a problem with my throat that has caused me on several occasions to have pills and capsules get stuck in my throat, dissolve, and then burn my esophagus (the tube from one's mouth to one's stomach). Both of these conditions have resulted in severe heartburn (severe enough for the doctors to question whether I was having a heart attach). This product, however, gives me IMMEDIATE relief.
I have learned that I get the best relief if I take this product as soon as I start feeling any heartburn rather than waiting for the heartburn to get to its full intensity. Also, I have found that when my medication does get stuck in my throat that I can prevent the heartburn by immediately taking this preparation. Since this product is a liquid, it coats my esophagus (and probably stomach) better than any of the tablet or gel digestive preparations.
SUGGESTED USES OF MYLANTA MAXIMUM STRENGTH LIQUID
The bottle recommends this product for heartburn, gas, sour stomachs. I have known of several people who have had their upset stomachs relieved by this product also.
WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS
This preparation is comprised of three active ingredients: simethicone (40 mg.), aluminum hydroxide (400 mg.), and magnesium hydroxied (400 mg.). Simethicone reduces gas production and the associated pain. The latter two ingredients neutralize stomach acids; thus, reduce burning.
DOSAGE
The recommended dosage is 2 - 4 teaspoons before meals and at bedtime.
SIDE EFFECTS
Any drug can have side effects and other risks associated with its use. Most of the side effects of this drug are due to its effects on the gastrointestinal system including nausea, decreased appetite, diarrhea, or constipation. Other side effects include fatigue and headache. Almost every time I take the preparation, I get nauseated. Part of my nausea may be psychological since I hate the taste of this medication. Other members of my family, however, do not experience this or any other side effects.
I would strongly recommend that anyone who is pregnant, nursing, has a serious medication condition, or is taking other medications, check with a health care provider before taking this (or any) drug. Antacids, such as this one, can interfere with the absorption of certain medications preventing the other medication from having their expected benefit.
Also, since heartburn is often confused with pain from a heart attack, if one does not get immediate relieve with this product, emergency medical assistance may be necessary. I have personally known several people to die because they thought that they were having indigestion when they were really having a heart attack.
My only serious concern about this medication, especially if it is take on a long term basis, is that it contains aluminum. Current research on Alzheimer's Disease has linked aluminum to this disorder. I would not recommend any long-term contact with aluminum, unless directed to do so by a physician.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, this drug is a highly effective antacid that is fairly safe. Be sure to shake the bottle and accurately measure the dosage. We always keep some in our medicine cabinet and I always take some with me while traveling. It seems like changes in the water and food make me more likely to suffer heartburn. I have found this medication in small sample size containers that are perfect for travel.
