My 6 year old daughter is a hockey fanatic. She loves to watch and play hockey - from ice to roller. But, when she wanted to bring her sticks indoors to practice.. we had to find a solution. We found it, in the Mylec Mini Hockey Goal Set.

The Mylec Mini Goal set is often called "Knee Hockey". It is made to be played indoors. Our set included 1 goal, 2 sticks, and a foam ball for around $20. You can also purchase more elaborate sets that include a mat, 2 goals, and even a goalie stick. We've since added a few other sticks (the giveaway autograph size sticks you can purchase at hockey games are just the right size), and some mini foam pucks (3 pack for about $8).
The set comes with an unassembled goal, that puts together quickly by snapping together plastic (PVC) pipes and mounting the net. It can be collapsed when not in use, but in my house we keep it put together and off to the side/corner of a room - my daughter plays with it often. The goal measures about 30" by 24" and the sticks are only a little over a foot or so long. The game is meant to be played on your knees.. however, if you have little kids (toddlers and under 5s, don't be surprised to see them stand up and play like golf!). Our set came with a white (righty) stick and blue (lefty) stick. This works out since my daughter is a lefty, however you can just turn it around if you need to. Additional sticks can be purchased and around around $10 which I feel is a lot for a piece of plastic.
I love this game because its a way for my daughter to be active indoors. It is a great alternative for her than playing the Wii or otherwise running around wild - which she does. My daughter is a child who doesn't ever sit still and likes to be physically active and there are plenty of days that we just can't go outside and play (we live in New Jersey... rain rain rain and last year a lot of snow!). While we don't have a lot of breakables, she has siblings and we have quite a few pricey electronics... She used to want to practice her stick handling in the house and there simply isn't enough space for it. This small size hockey game allows her to still play and practice. She is content to shoot goals by herself or include her brother, father, or myself in on the fun. Usually we get our you know whats kicked, but our larger size is to an advantage when we are playing goalie and blocking the goal!
You can play this either on carpet or other flooring surfaces. We usually play on carpet and the ball works better than the foam pucks. If you are playing off of carpet, I suggest you get the mat that they sell because your knees will hurt. When it gets competitive, I've gotten rug burn! The mat can be rolled up for storage and looks like a hockey rink with the blue lines, circles, etc. However it also costs as much as the goal set does (or more). We only have one goal, though my daughter would like two. If you have more than one child playing, I'd suggest getting the set with 2 goals.
All in all, the Mylec Mini Goal set makes a fantastic and inexpensive gift for the young hockey fan or player in your life. We love it!
