Chances are I wouldnt have tried this bar had they not been sitting on the counter at GNC with those lovely neon orange sale stickers on them. How could I possibly pass up trying a new flavor when they were priced at .48 cents? They still had a month before they expired so I grabbed a handful of them, paid and started munching. Since I stick to a low carb diet I knew that Id only be able to eat about a third of the bar a day but that didnt stop me from trying them as soon as I left the store. Im normally not a huge fan of EAS bars, most of the ones that Ive tried have a nasty after taste or they arent designed for those who try to limit their carbohydrate intake. Dont get me started on Bill Phillips either, theres no love lost between he and I but for the price, I couldnt pass up trying out a few of these.
EAS Myoplex Lite Performance Nutrition Bars Chocolate Fudge
I doesnt matter what the price is on a bar, taste and carbs are the two things that really concern me. In fact, Ill even overlook the taste of something if it is low carb and will keep me from diving face first into a bowl of cereal or devouring three pieces of pizza. These have a pretty good taste but if you have eaten anything else or are drinking a soda or iced tea, you could have a nasty after taste from this bar. The bar itself is rather hard but you can solve that by sliding it in your pocket for a minute or two to soften it up. A crude trick but it works. The inside of the bar is the hard part but as I said, if you warm it up a little it does get a little softer; the faux chocolate coating isnt like a rock but on the same token it doesnt crack off and get all over your clothes when you are eating it.
From a nutritional standpoint these arent what I should be eating. This has 27 grams of carbs [17 from sugar] and 190 calories, for those numbers I could have a chicken breast, small salad and piece of fruit but who is going to carry all that around with them in case they get hungry or get sidetracked when on the road? My son wanted to try a bite of it, as he usually does, and promptly turned up his nose, spit out what remained of it and headed over to the bagel shop. For me the taste was good and it satisfied my craving for chocolate but there was no way I could eat an entire bar at once, even if the carbs werent a factor. It has that fake chocolate taste to it, not one that is going to turn you off from having a few bites but I give kudos to anyone that can eat an entire bar at one time.
The biggest problem I have with this is that EAS claims that this is great as a convenient & nutritious meal supplement or snack. While it does have 44% less calories and 43% less fat than their Myoplex Deluxe Nutrition Bars [their claim, not mine], I cant see them saying that this is a meal replacement type of bar and someone, somewhere not calling them on that. They really need to up the amount of protein for this to be considered a meal replacement bar, but that costs money and thats something that EAS just isnt willing to do. They dont come out and call this a meal replacement bar but they sure as hell lead you to believe that it can be used that way. Try using this instead of having a meal and youll be hungry 45 minutes later, negating eating the bar in the first place.
Price
As I said, I found these for .48 cents each at my local GNC. They were about a month from their expiration date so I decided to give them a try. The average selling price for these is anywhere from $1.99 to $2.50 depending on where you shop and you can by them from the EAS.com online store. Are they worth it? It all depends on what you are trying to do with your body. For a quick snack that isnt going to kill your diet this is a good pick but with 27 grams of carbs, its something that I have to eat in small amounts.
The Bottom Line
I really wish I would have grabbed a few more of these when they were on sale because they are nice to have around the house when a craving hits and you know that if you dont get something that resembles chocolate in your system you are going to snap. Im not sure if Id buy these again if they werent on sale but at lest I know that if I am in a pinch and dying for something sweet I can grab one of these, take a few bites and avoid going completely off my diet. These arent made to be a meal replacement [even though EAS puts that on the wrapper] or nutritional supplement [you get some vitamins but not all of them], just something to have on hand between a well balanced meal to keep you from feeling like you are going to fall over.
